Quadro K4000 impressions

Got a new workstation with 4770k and quadro K4000 for solidworks. This card is stupid fast. I threw my biggest assembly with about 100 parts at it, image quality cranked with fancy reflections and shading turned on and it just spins that assembly around like a top. Zoom in, zoom out, section view, it doesn't care. The card yawns at me.
If you need a workstation card, this one is a hell of a deal and will get it done.

Maybe I could get my dad to convince our company to give away the Quadro 6000's and upgrade to this/K6000's 😛 (if they haven't already done so)

Sarcasm aside, I think most companies (at least I know mine does, my dad validates the hardware to be used by the company) are more concerned with compatability more than anything else. For modellers, I'd imagine this card would support the standard applications of 3DSMAX, Blender, etc just fine. But there has to be a lot of testing done for companies such as my own (Oil and Gas industry), with their applications for 3D seismic visualizations. I know there's already a huge issue of OilFieldManager not fully working properly with 64 bit OS's versus 32-bit OS's, and even upgrading to the same line of GPU's requires months of testing to ensure compatability.

It definitely seems like a solid choice for pro/am modellers though. I was already super happy when I got free HP XW9400 workstations with Quadro FX 4600's in them, but to have a new dedicated workstation card would be pretty neat. Maybe when they upgrade from their HP Z800's I can snag one down the line (Apparently they just throw their old computers out 😵)

For those who don't want to drop over a thousand bucks on a rebadged GTX part and aren't dependent on enterprise support/certifications/corporate infrastructure/whatever, you might be interested in this. Unlike some previous generations' Quadro unlock mods, this one appears to operate with no limitations.

K4000 is cool. Plain 4000 (PNY) in stereo mode (Linux) -- even when idle -- is really hot. K4000 is not. :biggrin:

Not really.

Bang for the buck:
AMD FirePro W5000 = $463

Faster than K4000 and cheaper
AMD FirePro W7000 = $630

Specifically for SolidWorks, K4000 is overpriced.

Overall though, K4000 and W7000 are probably the sweet spot for workstation cards right now.

You must be kidding. Do you expect people to find, buy, and then solder really small surface mount components by hand? And they have to risk destroying a gaming card that costs hundreds of dollars when they could just buy a Quadro or Firepro and be done with it?

Modding a gaming card that costs hundreds of dollars modded to a professional card that that cost thousands of dollars makes sense to me. If you don't know how to do the solder yourself, you can pay for that service at some electronic shop with appropiated tools for the job.
I don't see it too different to classical pencil tricks with Athlons XP's PCB bridges, just that these were done to merely overclock it, not to be able to use tuned Drivers that can drastically increase performance with the same GPU horsepower.



One of the things that I wasn't able to gather enough information about, is the results of a proper comparision between a GeForce or Radeon, a softmodded version of it with hacked Drivers or BIOS, and a hardmoded version of it like when changing resistors, and the proper equivalent Quadro or FirePro. Basically, I don't have idea if via modding you could archieve the exact same performance and features (Quadro K4000 is based on the GK106 die, so its pretty much the same as a GeForce GTX 660), or there are things that are fused off the die like Intel and AMD does with Processors that you can't enable again.
Softmodded versions seems to consistently provide better performance or enable some acceleration/features on applications that wouldn't let you to do it with a gaming card, but on some Benchmarks I saw on previous generations there was still differences with a proper professional card. Still, mods like these are popular to do on some circunstances that they were really proven to work. GeForces are modded to Quadros often when using a Hypervisor like Xen because is much more easier to do VGA passthrough to a VM that way.
