Hello everyone. I am building a workstation for my fiancee and myself. I do photography, graphic design, web design, programming, little gaming, etc. She does CAD, Pro/E, etc.

So far I have spec'd out the rest of the machine so I will give some back end info.

SuperMicro H8DCE mobo
(2) Dual Core Opteron 265
(2) 2x1GB Corsair XMS 3200

So there is that. I may be employing a raid config but that is undecided. Anyhow, the H8DCE is capable of SLI, full x16 for both cards. I realize that workstation cards are better optimized for OpenGL performance. So they work better in apps like CAD.

What I want to know is, in an SLI config can a 7800GT(X) (which can be had for much less than say a Quadro 3400 or 4500) be on par with these workstation counterparts? My gaming takes a back seat to my fiancee's work so that is not the issue. I would like an SLI config that doesn't eat up 2,000+ bucks. I also don't want to hinder her ability to do work.

I also understand that it may be possible to change the firmware on a 7800GTX and unlock those workstation features. Thanks in advance!

that was possible with the 5 and 6 series i think, im not sure there's a way to do it now, nvidia caught on like they did with the unlockin of closed quads.
