hello! i have a question that you guys might able to answer, i am an architectual student and am tryng to build a workstation type of system for rendering 3D graphics on AUTOCAD programs (mostly openGL). i was thinking of buying a quadro card, but the tech guy of the comapny where am inquiring about the card told me that the performance of the quadro fx and geforcefx is almost identical (quadroFX 2000 and FX5800 to be exact) he told me that the quadro is only more expensive beacuse of the bundled 3D softwares. i dont need the 3D softwares, i already have them. should i go for the GeForceFX? the performance difference might only be slight if any

well, it used to be the quadro and geforce were very very similar. hacks could even be made to turn the geforce into a quadro. but quadros would beat the geforce when it comes to CAD and professional work. but the geforce would beat a quadro in games. for the two differant cards are optomized for 2 differant tasks. for what you are describing, a quadro would be a better choice, if price was not a matter.

I think you can get a geforce 4 or Fx into a quadro by using soft quadro and rivatuner you can make it a quadro for half the money(The quadro fx 2000 costs 1,500) I used this on my laptop to make a geforce 440 go into a quadro 550go. Not sure if the fx family is supported but that could be a option. Go here for it I guess only the geforce 4 family is supported but still read up on it and with any hacks becareful because it can damage your card and ruin warranty.

I currently run Pro Engineer with a Quadro4/750xgl from PNY & may upgrade later to the FX2000 as well .
The FX2000 is a sweet card ;)

If you want to find a card without the bundled software , try to find an online wholesaler who sells the card by itself , with no budled software .................................... Also known as "White box or OEM"

Also , don't listen to the people that tell you a Gaming card will have the same performance as a Workstation class card . I read many reviews before I bought my card & it's just not so .

I have two NV28 engineering samples, a GeForce4 Ti4800SE and a Quadro4 980 XGL. While I don't have a clue about the Quadro antialiasing advantages for 3D workstation applications, I see the Quadro benchmark over 3000 3Dmark01 higher than the GeForce, at the same clock speeds!

all i can say is the quadro FX can muster 16 x anti aliasing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

shame bout the price tho

u thought about ATI's Fire GL series?

the quadro fx will be much better for real opengl apps. the geforce cards will slow to a crawl when you open more than 2 or 3 opengl windows.

if you can deal with that the geforce would work fine.

if thats the case, then i shuld limit myself on using less opengl windows if that will bring me at least closer to the performance of a quadro. i read from cgtalk that rendering speed is affected by the CPU and not by the GPU. the GPU affects the speed and quality of realtime opengL apps on viewports and windows we see on the monitor. if thats the case, i think i can work with a geforcefx 5900 (without the ultra) if it is only a little slower compared to the quadro. by the way the quadro cards are 3 to 5 times the price of the fx 5900 here in the philippines, and its a really hefty price to pay!

cfule ---- I just found a review of a 1000 & 2000 FX they throw a 980xgl in the mix also , for comparitive results :)

Review HERE

After reading this , I would purchase the 1000FX , as there is not a significant lead over the 1000FX going with a 2000FX .
Also , with the 2000FX being around $500. more , it's definatley not woth it ;)

NewEgg prices / both retail -----

PNY 2000 FX -- $1,330.00
PNY 1000 FX -- $845.
