quadro 4 980 xgl

I know that one should not purchase this game exclusively for gaming, it's a workstation card for business applications. But I can't find any reviews for how it's actually DONE for gaming. Does anyone have any comments? Comparable to what gaming card?

Wow quite a lot of workstation graphics card posts today. Gaming benchmarks on a workstation card are very rare. The last I remember seeing is one that Tomshardware did back around the year 2000. I can't seem to find it anymore.

I personally haven't used the quadro line of cards. But I have used ATI's line of workstation cards (Fire GL, GL2). One of my coworkers wanted to try gaming on it. Conclusion: only 1 out of 5 games would even run at all due to driver issues (ATI drivers suck and gaming drivers on a workstation card suck even more). His impressions were that it was about 20% slower than the equivalent ATI home card. Maybe the trend is the same for NVidia, maybe not.

I've used a Quadro4 700 XGL, same driver as regular nvidia cards.. games ran w/o problem. I can even swap out to another Nvidia card w/o reinstall driver, due to the unifed driver they got..

I would say game play seem the same as a fx5200 (mx based), Has the usual analog/dvi out.. couldn't really tell.. still have the cards, got 2.. It might be slower.. but i never actually ran bench on them

980xgl is the same chip as the 8x version of the Ti4600 (ti4800?).

fx500 = fx5200
fx1000= fx5800
fx1100 = fx 5700
fx2000 = fx 5800 ultra
fx3000 = fx5900/5950 ultra

ithere's a couple more quadro/geforce equivalancies, don't recall all of them, but if you softmod the gaming version of the card to a workstation card under one os install, you can run it as it's original gaming card under a second install - so you have dual boot: one for gaming and one for working, all at the gaming card price. (this is actually slightly more complicated than I've described, for details check out the rivatuner forum on guru3d)

in games quadros (real or modded) tend to run a bit slower than their geforce counterparts due to driver optimizations, but it's the same hardware and roughly comparable

yeah i didn't know which was the counter part equivalent.. which explains why my 700 was somewhat near or faster than the fx5200 (which is mx crap)

is there any way to softmod it back to a gaming card and use the game driver? 4600/4800 would be nice

Quadro cards are basically the same as the "gamer" versions of the cards - they just have a few more things enabled. They won't be any slower in games.
