I came across a Quadro FX 3400 for sale for $130. Since I'm going to be dabbling in 3D modeling, would it be better to go with this card or could I get a GeForce that would outperform it within a ~30-40 dollar price differential? I'm not TOO concerned about games, I'd rather have the application performance.

Id get the 3700 but if ya cant. The 3400 only has 256mb.

Im using the 1700 and works great. Just make sure ya have a good driver. And if ya have Viasta, make sure ya got a clean install of Vista and not upgraded...

If your using Maya, Id think of using the Quadro's.

I'm simply considering the 3400 because of the cheap price. Could a 3700 be had around the same range?

Why get the Quadro? the 3400 is equiavlent to a 6800 and majority of those can be modded into a Quadro. For $130, you should get a 8800gts 640mb and mod it into a FX 4600

depends upon what u need to use it for. Assuming a windows based system here , consumer cards only give max performance in the primary window so applications like games etc work better however professional cards have good performance across all windows and the drivers themselves are written for maximum quality output and precision rendering. For eg I work with Autodesk inventor once i have 2-3 windows open with assemblies of over 200 parts then the difference between consumer and professional cards is very evident. Consumer cards start to glitch render and while rotating object they would disappear etc whereas the professional series card barely bat an eyelid at it, be it quadro or the firegl series

The 1700 is $500. If your not really playing games, then go with the 3400. Maya runs much faster.

Ya cant softmod and for $130, thats a steal.

I have a gefores syatem and a Quadro system just for Maya and Photoshop. If your serious about modeling. Stick with Quadro.

Try modeling in Maya on a game card system and you'll be pulling your hair out.

Maya dont like ATI cards either.

I'm going to be picking up a quadro 4500-based system for 400 bucks from craigslist, an old pixar HP workstation. LMK if anyone else is interested, there are 20 systems available, I'll probably get two.
