I'm looking at a couple different laptops, basically something in the 15.6" range that is decently powerful and mobile. Two that have popped up are the Thinkpad W520 and the Samsung Series 7. Quad-core i7 in both (Thinkpad is a little faster), price is pretty similar. The one thing I'm not too sure about is the video card - the Thinkpad has a 2 GB Quadro 1000M, the Samsung has a 1GB Radeon 6750M. It looks like the Radeon may be slightly faster for gaming, but I haven't been able to find much information - anyone have any insight? I'm looking at the 1600x900 screens for both (though the Thinkpad is available with a 1920x1080, which I might consider).

I'd also appreciate any comments from people who have used the W520 or Series 7.

notebookcheck.net gives the radeon a 18% advantage in 3Dmark 11
(you can compare it to the 550M here which is 4% faster then the 1000M and 14% slower then the 6750M in the first link)

Are you an intense gamer?
Some Games can use the 1GB extra RAM for textures, but the AMD will give you more fps (e.g. 15.0FPS vs 17.7FPS)
Downside of the Quadro Drivers is that they are less updated and not aimed for the game industry, albeit it should work just fine.

No personal experience with Samsung laptops, but a customer told me last week he misses his Samsung notebook from his previous job.

The extra money put by lenovo in the quadro must be economized somewhere else...

Thanks for the link. I'm not a heavy gamer, but I do play some; on the other hand, I don't do any heavy CAD either so I'm not sure how useful the Quadro would be. I was mostly wondering if the extra 1 GB of memory made enough difference to make up for the slower GPU, doesn't look like it does (at least for today's games and benchmarks).

Quadro is made for accuracy, not speed. If things are drawn poorly in a game, not of much real consequence. If things are drawn poorly in CAD, floors of building don't join where they are supposed to.

It is also important to keep in mind that while both screens are 15.6" 1600x900, the Samsung's screen is drastically inferior in terms of contrast and overall quality.

I'd just slap an AUO V4 1080p panel in either an be done with it myself. 1600x900 requires two LVDS channels so it's almost guaranteed to be a direct swap.
