Hi Guys,

Basically I'm trying to build a vm server for home. I need something powerful enough to last me a few years and be able to support multiple vm's (say 4) + sql, ad, and maybe exchange. I was thinking of doing dual processor. I am just wondering what the major differences are between the 5300's and the 3200's (for example). They are both quad core and at similar speeds. Do I need to go to the 5300's for the type of usage I plan to do? (Just home stuff nothing production/external).

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

well the 5345 is 2.33 ghz and 1333 bus, the x3220 is 2.4 and 1066 bus.

i would say they will be similar in speed since the FB-dimm latency will probably kill the extra speed of the faster bus.

that said the 5345 would go on a 771 board, so presumeably you'd have 2 sockets and could get another one and have 8 cores. the x3220 is basically a q6600 with a xeon logo on it.

4 VMs and sql and exchange would proably run ok on one quad if you were say running vmware server or esx. i think you are probably beter off getting the x3220 or a q6600 on a normal board, and just taking the money you save (on fb - dimms and 771 board) and buying more ram. like say 8gb of 2gb dimms.
