Got in a trade an NCR quad xeon P2-400Mhz. I'm not going to shell cash for any Windows variant that does 4 processors. Any recommendations on an OS that would do it (Linux variant?)

Prolly gonna set it up as a ftp server, + some project. Recommendations on a project? (Only been doing SETI so far).

Thanks!

Oh, this thing is bigger than a fridge Text

akk, NCR is the debill (I do a lot of work for Unisys), I'd say Seti would be the way to go, but being linux and not knowing your memory availablity, you could probably also run other projects with wine.

Heh, ok for the NCR part...

Anyways, its got 1Gb of RAM. I'll see how many SCSI disks I could find for it (MANY!)
Anybody familiar with Ubuntu? I just dl:t it and burned to disk. I'll see if it installs nice and fine.
Basically all newer Linux distros should work with 4 processors, right?

I've played with Ubuntu a little bit recently. It's derived from Debian Linux, is pretty simple to install and has a nice set of packages (albeit smaller than Debian's base).

I still find myself using plain ol' Debian when I need a reliable Linux distro. You can't beat apt and Debian's package system for maintaining your system.

You might want to check out the new Debian Sarge installer. It has greatly simplified the installation process. Here's a link: Debian Installer Link

I've run Seti and SOB on my Linux systems with great success. :)

Good luck getting this system installed and crunching. Sounds like a fun project :D
