Quad Opterons system as a Gaming Server

So I was a lan party this weekend....

There was a rep for AMD there, and he brought along with him a quad opteron server. It was running 10 instances of counter-strike:source server.

16% cpu usage.

*drool*


EDIT: it was quad opterons and not a quad core opteron server. They were Opteron 280's

It's more network intense than CPU intensive..

Perhaps. I was told by the network admin that the majority of our network traffic out to the internet were multiple GBs of steam related packets.

just goes to shoe how useless it was to host CS:S on a quad core opteron.

i have a quadcore opteron aswell o.o i tried hosting a css server too and yeah the cpu usage is minimal even with 16~20 users on, it starts going up after 28 ish tho

dual opteron 275's
4gb corsair twinx 1024's ecc registered
2x raptor 74gb

on a tyan 2775 i think >< its been a while since i played with it tho 😛 once i colocated the thing i havent really done much to it lol
