Hey guys,

So, I'm looking to build my first PC. I'm an amateur music producer in my free time, so whatever I build needs to have enough processing power to handle reason 4.0, ProTools and several USB MIDI-input instruments (drum-pad, keyboard, mixer, etc.)

I've got a 46" Sony Bravia w/HDMI inputs that I'd also like to have connected to my PC (to watch movies + browse from the couch) and am dreaming of a core 3-monitor setup to actually make music/do basic spreadsheet work + trade on.

Below are the specs I'm looking to hit...obviously interested in whatever advice you guys have, this my first go at this and I apologize in advance for any n00b-related errors...

1) Robust processing power - this build needs to be able to handle lots of intense audio editing/music production/trading-related multitasking that in my experience can sometimes tax the hell out of CPUs...I also don't want to have to upgrade for a while so overkill is A-OK.
2) Lots of RAM - sounds take up lots of space and would like to be able to access as many as possible as quickly as possible in Reason, etc.
3) Quad-monitor setup w/the ability to display high-quality HD video with no hiccups/stutters/crashes on a 46" Sony Bravia w/HDMI inputs. The other 3 screens should be good resolution, high-quality, nice looking 21"+ monitors that I'll be using for the actual musicmaking/some basic spreadsheet work. I don't do any gaming now, but might try some Flight Simulator X in the future...
4) Lots of HD space. Multiple drives OK. Open to the idea of an SSD - from what I've been reading, they boot a ton faster...plus the idea of having one just sounds cool haha
5) Lots of USB ports, or the ability to plug in a powered external USB port for all the peripherals I'll be hooking up to the machine (drum pad, music keyboard, mixer, computer keyboard, mouse, ipod dock, blackberry dongle, external HD that I already own)
6) A good sound card that will (if this is even possible) be able to output digital audio to an external A/V/ receiver/amplifier.
7) A good wired mechanical keyboard + a good wired mouse. Right now I'm using a Lenovo KB1021 and love it, but I'm sure there are even better ones out there.
8) Decent to good looking case. Mid / Full sized towers are just fine. LED/clear stuff is cool too, but not absolutely necessary.

And the budget...anything up to $2,500 (really can go as high as $3,000 if absolutely necessary), inclusive of the 3 new monitors. Controlling for quality, cheaper is always better, but this is my dream setup and I finally have enough cash on hand to make it happen.

Alright, I'm excited to hear what you all have in mind!

P.S. I live in the US.

What app do you use for audio production. Sonar X2 Producer ?

What you need is fast single threaded cores PLUS 4 more threads for 8 threads that blows away AMDs new physical 8 core.

Grab 32GB of ram 16x2... For sure your going to need a SSD ,,, so grab a Samsung 840 256GB for 169.99 @ www.amazon.com and you also get free Fary Cry 3.

For video card,, just grab a 660 Ti or 670 Ti if you want more then 4x AA on 1080p.
What sound card you using ? what is your latency ? get back to me, gl

Wow, thanks guys for such quick replies!

Per TweakBoy's questions:

What app do you use for audio production. Sonar X2 Producer ?

I use Reason 4.0 at the moment, and Reason Recycle to create Rex loops from samples so I can chop / assign to my USB drum pad (Rex is surprisingly easier / more intuitive to use than trying to load up each individual sound into an NN-XT keyboard layout)

I'm looking into transitioning to ProTools (for music w/vocals, as Reason doesn't have the capability to deal with live vocals) - I primarily make electronic music / hip hop beats so it hasn't yet been an issue.

What you need is fast single threaded cores PLUS 4 more threads for 8 threads that blows away AMDs new physical 8 core.

I've never had an AMD computer for some reason, and wasn't planning on going that way with this build either. Do you think the i7 3930k make sense here? I know its impossible to "future proof" a build, but I'd like for this to last for 3 years or so operating at high speeds w/good reliability.

Grab 32GB of ram 16x2... For sure your going to need a SSD ,,, so grab a Samsung 840 256GB for 169.99 @ www.amazon.com and you also get free Fary Cry 3.

Wow. Thats an insane SSD price! Thanks for the headsup - will definitely be looking at this drive. I'm thinking possibly 2 SSDs in RAID 0 config - apparently that boosts the speed even more, but I'm interested to hear what you think about it with respect to music production (does it really make a difference?)

For video card,, just grab a 660 Ti or 670 Ti if you want more then 4x AA on 1080p.

One thing I'm worried about here is if 1 card will really be able to drive video to 4 monitors w/market charts, graphs, video streams and Reason running in 1080p...If Crossfire/SLI makes sense I'm definitely willing to spring for the extra card. Flight Simulator X across 3 screens in Xfire would probably be outrageous!

What sound card you using ? what is your latency ? get back to me, gl

Right now I have literally been using whatever stock sound chip came w/my Lenovo laptop. Its held up surprisingly well, but lately I've noticed greater and greater latency between pad/keyboard presses and them registering in Reason. Which leads to excessive use of the quantize function, which then ruins the "bounce" on hip-hop tracks...boom baps even regrooved, etc. don't sound nearly as good as they do when played live.

Latency I'm unsure of...

Per JayDip's recommendations:

3. 2X7970/2X670(4Gb)

So Crossfire/SLI then...just a question, is this to make it useful for playing games (if I end up doing that with the machine?) Or do you think the two cards are necessary for just music production/trading. Just curious to hear your thoughts on this one.

6.Asus Xonar

Thanks for this tip! The whole series is surprisingly affordable and a few of the cards have the optical out I'm looking for. Seem to have positive reviews as well.

JayDip - given the type of setup I'm looking for, do you have any motherboard recommendations for me? i7 processor (3770K or 3930K), Xfire/SLI, 32 GB ram, potential SSD RAID array, etc.

Thanks again to both of you for your help so far. Looking forward to hearing back!
