Quad Core Processors, Socket AM2 or 939??

Well, heres the question, when will Dual Core processors get pushed enough to warrant Quad Core?

My main concern is to build using socket 939 or Socket AM2. Because 939 will most likely stop at dual core, while AM2 probably Quad or more.

So you think the 939 will last long enough with quad core to warrant building now or just waiting for AM2?
 
Pushed by what application?

Games will eventually benefit some from dual-core, but are unlikely to benefit from quad-core for many years.

Unless you're running stuff like Matlab or a huge SQL DB.. you wont need anything over a dual..
 
I see. Well this is good, since I after AM2 I'm hoping everything S939 will drop (processors and mobo). Which would make for a cheap and nice system 🙂
 
Or you can wait 6 months after AM2 is released, (which then a new socket type will be out) and you'll be able to buy an AM2 setup for cheap.

I dunno. Whatever they decide to call it. Point is, every 6 months a new socket is released.
 
The step from dual core support to quad core is miniscule. Once you get into the habit of multithreading it's relativly easy to step from using 2 cores to 4. The hard bit is restructuirng the program to run threaded in the first place.

However the benifits will be decreasing even faster than the law that-everyone-should-know-the-name-of says they should (there'll always be one thread that eats more CPU than the others, and it'll bottleneck everything).

How long are you planning to use your computer for anyway?

Right. And you just pulled that out of your ass huh.

478 has been out for years. Socket 939 and LGA 775 is closing in on 2 years. Socket A was around many years.
 
Im not talking about "intel". *and damn you for making me say it*. How long did Socket 754 last again? *sigh*

might aswell build a dual core system now, then buy a whole new computer when quads go mainstream... i belive the first quads we'll see are amd's, beginning 2007? and then its only server opterons...

might also skip the quads and go octo 😛 you can always upgrade graphic cards in between.
 
The only part about S754 being obsolete is the CPU department.

So a cheap single core setup would be compareable to a S939 setup.
 
I'm not even going dula core unitl the prices drop considerably. Hopefully after M2 socket cores are released, the X2's prices will start to fall rapidly.

Just the fact that M2 uses DDR2 will keep me from upgrading to that for quite awhile, and maybe never. There is a decent possibily that the next AMD core will use DDR3 RAM, which would make buying a M2 core a poor choice IMO.

Best to just stick with S939 for now, and see hwere we are in a year from now.

Well, don't leave out AGP. 754 = AGP

 
Seeing as how DC optimizations are poor now, quad isnt even worth mentioning. In fact, if you read the Dual DC Xeon/Opteron comparisons, some of them actually run slower than just a single dual core.

They have PCI-e MB's for S754.
