I never could make sense of BOINC SETIs stats ,that's half its trouble:p

Err isn't even a decent 300w PSU cutting it a little fine?
I know they exagerate how many watts we need for rigs ,but still......

What do you mean you will get your 'Q6600 this days' ,sorry mate your English has stumped me again;)

Well you definitely don't want to run a quad core CPU on that 300w PSU ,that would be too much for it to handle.

E4500 is a good choice. I've been ripping up the charts (modesty, heh) in SoB, with only an E4400, running at 2.8Ghz. So far so good. Waiting for G0 for quad-core goodness.

You like 'em cheap & dirty?;)

An E4500 will be easy on a mbrds FSB ,I wonder how much that'll impact performance on DC projects though?

I just overlocked my friend's X3210 Xeon LGA775 quad-core CPU. (Stock 8 x 266 = 2.13Ghz)

He's just using the stock CPU cooler, which I think he didn't put on quite right, since it seems to idle at nearly 65C. Default vcore for his B3-stepping chip is 1.2375v.
So far, we are running it at 7 x 401 = 2.8Ghz. It refuses to boot at anything x 350-375. I can get it to boot at 8 x 401 = 3.2Ghz, but only after setting the vcore to 1.45v (~1.35v actual), and it idles at 80+C then. If you try to do anything, it thermal throttles, and scales back to 6 x 400 and 1.050v.

He has a new cooler ordered. Don't bother trying to overclock very far with the stock cooler.

Btw, it does 4.2M x 3, and 3.7M x 1. Not sure why one core is slower than the others. That's 16.3M cems/sec overall. Not bad.

Gack. Got my 4500, and discovered the mobo my 820D was in is "Dual-Core" and not Core 2 Duo compatible. Oh well. Time to build another new box. :D

What do you guys think about this cooler, for a quad-core?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...=gemini%2bcpu%2bcooler

Edit: Also, I checked RUSSELLMANIA's SoB stats, and it shows him doing 4Mcems/sec, not the 16.3M cems/sec that he should have been generating, with all four cores going. It was like only one core was counted in the stats. I don't know what is going on there.

His stats were also reduced from 8T to 6.xT after a time, not sure why that was either.

Err ,you don't want to be overclocking a CPU if you think the cooler isn't on right!:Q ,& yes 65C is way too high for stock idle ,even the std HSF should do much less than that.I wouldn't even run the CPU if it was hitting 80+!

Ulli
What was your CPU loaded with?

I get 48-52C loaded with DPAD :D ,about 57-63C with Orthos.
Ambient temps are about 20-25C.

This is my cooler

Ass1 - that looks a lot like my Arctic Freezer.
I wonder how it would do, anybody using one with a quad?

Yes, that's the one.
Keeps my cpu at acceptable temps as long as I keep the fins clean.

That's one heck of a cooler....

Hey Larry are you saying that Russellmania is running sob with a Q6600 ?

Well, I have 2 quads @3.2 doing F@H SMP, and they are getting about 3k ppd each. I have a third coming soon.

Well, he should be, but he seems disinterested at this point. I keep teasing him that I'm ahead, and that he could catch up in a few days with his quad, but so far no go.
He has an X3210, with that aformentioned cooler that he just installed today. Running at 8 x 402 = 3.2Ghz. Temps are crazy though. He seems happier about them with the new cooler, but I'm still not convinced. Temps under load still just about hit the thermal-throttle point when running prime small FFTs.

I'm thinking that his IHS is really out of spec, or miss-mounted, or something. He had exceedingly high temps with the stock cooler too. I ordered one of the same Gemini II coolers for my quad (soon to be purchased, next on my list really), and I'm wondering if I made a mistake.

what voltage and load temps? On my friend's X3210 @ 3.2Ghz, 1.45V (bios) / 1.344 (actual), his load temps hit 93-97C or more on the internal thermal sensor.

That's w-a-y too hot!

Maybe thier is something wrong with the IHS or the HSF, but for now at least if I were him I'd back off the vcore to 1.4v & drop the clock speed to its highest stable point. That should reduce temps quite a bit until he fixes his cooling.
What case cooling has he got? ,what ambient temps does he get?

I though that you might want to see some pics of my 25M setup so here goes...

1st Pic

Here's is 25M at work, the one of the left is my main system putting out about 13.5M
The case is an Antec 1050B, it's running an E6850 @ 3.6 with an Asus Silent Square heat sink. Motherboard is a P5K Premium with 1.32 TB Seagate hard drives. It has 2GB of OCZ PC2-8500 Reaper's, an Antec Quattro 850Watt and 2 x Saphire HD2600XT 256MB GDDR4 in Crossfire Mode, the monitor is an Acer AL2216W with Cambridge Soundworks THX speakers for sound.

2nd Pic

Here you can see the APC 1500 smart-ups even with 3 PC's running at %100 it's only has 2 lights on.
Behind the UPS you can see where I removed the cable jack connecting the two rooms and snaked in all the cables to the adjacent room.

The two PC's on the right are AMD 5200+EE 65W versions running on Asus M2A-VM boards with Thermaltake TMG-A3 heatsinks. They are also running Ubuntu with a belkin KVM witch. Each PC is putting out about 6.3M and these PC's are dead silent.

Just to give you an idea, the E6850 is crunching more than two 5200+ PC's. But the two AMD's still came in about %20 cheaper IMO.

3rd Pic

Here is my main desk which I made myself. It fits perfectly and I wanted the biggest keyboard tray a desk has ever had :) Total cost of the desk $75

The good with this setup is that there is NO heat, NO noise whatsoever, everything is dead silent.
The Bad is that I need extension cables for keyboard video and mouse and USB if I want to connect a USB device while at the computer and and I have to goto the other room to change/insert DVD's

The Keyboard is a MS Ergonomic 4000 (excellent) and the mouse is a Logitech Laser 1000MX. I have had the mouse for about two years now and it's starting to fail on me.

4th Pic

This is just my side desk where I work and set up spare PC's
