Qtparted

ok I have one partition on master drive that I want to leave alone.
drive 2 also has one partition of 72 gb with a linux install that I also want to leave alone and a swap of 2 gb for that installation.

From what I have read so far it seems that if I boot into the knoppix live cd( v3.9) I should be able to safely partition drive 2's extra free space into one or more new partitions. )Purpose being I would like to look over other distros at my leisure, so it would also need to be bootable.)

The icons on the knoppix desktop shows the drive as being unmounted but when I start qtparted it says that partition is busy and all the partitioning options seemed to be greyed out. What am I missing here?
thx
dan

ps. or perhaps you know of a better way to accomplish what I am trying to do.
