Q's about SetiWatch and buffering clients

Hey guys!

Been running the Seti@Home GUI for a while. Never really been a big fan of CLI stuff because I like pretty pictures to keep me entertained. :)

Well, I made the jump. I'm now running the 3.03winnt-cli. Looks to be MUCH faster than the GUI, even when the GUI was in screensaver mode. So far SetiWatch is saying I'm getting between 38-42% done per hour on this WU. This is on a P3@1050(7*150). I usually got 6-7hrs a WU with V3.03 with the GUI, so this is looking very promising. :)

On to the questions.

1. Does SetiWatch really eat up CPU cycles? Guess I'll make a shortcut for it since I don't need to check stats much.

2. Is there anyway to minimize the CLI version to the system tray? It kinda annoys me with the minimized box there all the time. Anyway to just run it in the background?

3. What's the best program to use to buffer WU's for V3.03. I hear alot of them stopped working when V3.03 went out(Berkeley changed the servers or something?). I've got a constant connection, and haven't had any problem connecting in a long time, but I just want to have some piece of mind that my computer won't be sitting here idle for hours on end when it can't connect. Oh yea, can I also setup other computers to fetch WU's off my machine over the network? Then maybe have SetiWatch monitor their WU history?

Thanks for any answers.

Hi Def, You can't judge from one, or a partial work unit (WU). You must also be aware of the three type of WU's: Low, High and medium Angle-Range. HAR WU's (>1.x Angle-Range) are the quickest to process, with LAR (<.1 Angle-Range) WU's being the slowest. Most WU's are of the medium Angle-Range variety. My PIII-700e/945, for expample, does the various types of WU as follows:

LAR...6.00 hrs
HAR...3.15 hrs
MAR...4.25 hrs

Search this forum for more info.

Now for your questions:

1. I don't use SetiWatch, so I can't say how much CPU it uses. I prefer SetiSpy. But, if you search this forum for WINTOP.EXE you will find info on a program that will measure cpu utilization.

2. & 3. I use SetiDrive to manage the client and to cache WU's. It can be minimized to the Systray.

From this linklink you can find links to SetiSpy and SetiDriver.

Good luck!

When you were using the GUI version did you have 'blank screen' enabled? ,if not then that would nearly double your WU time.
BTW you'll need to do about 10Wu's before you get a good idea of WU times.
Nice fast SETI ship you have BTW :)

If you put SETILog.exe in the same folder as the CLI and make a shortcut to SETILog and put a /h switch in the shortcut, it'll run the CLI hidden. Or, you can run SETIDriver which will also run the CLI hidden.
