Had a QQ about the most basic Wii console package (the one that goes for $250 MSRP) -- it comes with the Nunchuk add-on and Wii Sports, right?

Trying to figure out what the cheapest package that still has everything needed for one person to get started with is.

Heh, that's the only official Wii package available, and it's been around since day 1.

I'm not a big console gamer. Can you tell :D?

Anyways, just making sure there isn't a compelling reason to go with one of the bundle versions out there, with the substantially inflated prices. As long as it comes with the remote+nunchuk, and at least one game, that's good enough for a start.

When you decide to get a second controller, you might consider getting Wii Play. It comes with a Wii Remote and costs $10 more than a standard Wii Remote. It has a couple of good games, and I got at least $10 of fun out of it.

I actually disagree about needing a second 'chuck - I did perfectly fine without one.

Know what you really need? Wavebirds.

When it comes to bundles, it all boils down to the savings and quality as opposed to buying everything that it additionally comes with separately. More often than not, all that matters is the game(s) that it comes with and whether or not you like them enough to pay for them even at the discounted price.

Beyond that, do what others here have told you so far and you should be good to go. The battery recharger is a must. I recommend La Crosse BC900 + Sanyo Eneloop Batteries. Both can be found on Amazon and other various sites. Two reasons why you want to get this thing is that the normal console specific rechargeable batteries and their recharge stations do a crappy job at recharging making the battery life decline quite a bit. That will not be the case at all with the La Crosse charger. The second reason is that console specific rechargeable batteries can only be used on that console and they are expensive so it really doesn't make sense to buy them when you can get batteries that work for everything.

Lastly, if you have an HDTV, I highly recommend purchasing the Wii component cable. The difference it makes graphically is far from 360 or PS3 quality, but still well worth the purchase.

For Mario Kart though?

I've tried it with:
- just the WiiMote
- WiiMote+Nunchuk
- GameCube controller

And out of those three options, playing with just the WiiMote didn't work for me at all.

As for the bundles, if it came with a decent game that I would eventually buy anyway, sure I'd pay a bit more. Some of those bundles come with some really random games though, that I'd never buy.

I already own a few sets of rechargeable AAs .

Mario Kart comes with a wheel. The wiimote+wheel is not my favorite, personally, but it works a lot better than just a Wiimote.

Whatever you do don't fall for one of those ebay/craigslist "bundles" of 2 controllers (wiimote + nunchuck) and 4 games (boxing, tennis, golf and bowling)

As far as mario kart, steering with a wheel is somehow more "fun" than using a proper controller (either gamecube or the classic controller) but nowhere near as precise. Still, there's something more fun about driving with a real wheel.

LOL, what's worse is when they try to pass off a Wii with Wii Play and one extra nunchuck as being "4 controllers, 14 games!"

Of course, the four controllers mean the Wiimote and nunchuck that come with the system, the bundled Wiimote from Wii Play, and one extra nunchuck. The 14 games are the five Wii Sports minigames and the nine Wii Play minigames. It's only $320 to buy all that stuff new, but people try to get $350-$400 or more.

The only advantage to the wheel in Mario Kart is the button on the wheel that makes it easier to drift. But I find that using a Classic or GameCube controller along with automatic drifting makes me faster anyway because I have less to think about, even if I do miss out on blue sparks.

this.

and for mario kart, I actually really like using the wheel. it was a lot more fun. But yeah, maybe not so good for really serious playing.

So apparently, right after Christmas is a bad, bad time to be looking for in-demand consoles...

I vaguely remember going through the same thing when I was hunting for an onyx DS a few years ago (camping the tracker websites).

Playing Mario Kart Wii w/ the wheel is weird. I do refer using the classic controller scheme, except you'll need a gamecube controller 'cause the classic controller that attaches to the Wiimote doesn't fricking work... Stupid Nintendo.

I had much better luck befriending an employee of a store. For me, it was Toys R Us & Target.
I went to both last year in Dec, and of course, neither had it in stock. So I asked when they were expecting them, and neither knew, so I asked if they would call me when they came in. I told them if they did, I'd give them $10. They laughed, but said that they would, and this was at both stores.

I wasn't really expecting anything, but both actually called me. The Toys guy called first. I was so shocked, I took the rest of the day off & went to get it. I offered the guy $20 for being a man of his word, but he turned it down. He told me to stop in & see him when I wanted something. Thanks to him, I got Wii Fit for me & 2 co workers.

The Target guy called about a week later. I gave that one to a friend.

get your wiifit from costco or sams. i got my wii fit from costco for $10 less than retail today.

also if you're adventurous, home brew applicaitons has came a long way....

i didn't like my charge station, because you have to remove the nunchuck attachment to charge, plus the wii has to be on to power the usb power source that it uses. some cheaper charge station is known to fry your remote. so make sure you buy a good one.

So, I ended up getting just the core console from Walmart .

Still trying to decide what games to get. I'll probably eventually get SSBB and Mario Kart, but for now, Ghost Squad looks kind of interesting. Might get the Zapper + Link's Crossbow Training along with it. I also thought about House of the Dead and Umbrella Chronicles, but I'm zombied out from all the hours I've spent with Left 4 Dead recently ...
