The discussion was first started in this thread [l]http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=40&threadid=228523[/l] but I thought I'd bring it out here to see what you guys think/know...

So, is this just a remarked Plextor? If it is, It could save us upwards of $50, and make the drive cost only about $120 USD...

Does anyone own this drive?...Anyone know of any reviews of this?

Thanks

ForeverSilky: Looks like the Creative 8432 is a Plextor in disguise 🙂

This is an email I got from someone who seems to know what they are talking about:

<< Hi,

Both the QPS and Creative are indeed rebadged Plextor 8/4/32 drives. I have no proof for the QPS, but several users reported that to me and in newsgroups. About the Creative I'm sure. It's even possible to use Plextor firmwares with this drive (see http://www.ping.be/satcp/firmwares.html ).

However, those drives are somewhat stripped down versions of the Plextor. They have only 2 MB cache while the retail Plextor has 4 MB. You'll have twice as fast a buffer underrun (= coaster - wasted disc) with the QPS/Creative. Also Creative is known for horrible support (takes ages before they release firmware upgrades). QPS is even worse, they don't release updates. Thus no CloneCD for QPS users... Therefore it's not recommended to buy the QPS or Creative but spend a little more to get the real Plextor...

The Creative costs less than the QPS, but both dont give good firmware support. I am probably going to go with Creative, since they are well-known....
