QPS 24X cdrw burning consistently slower than normal =[

at first i was happy with my trusty lite-on 16x, then swapped it with my cousins new QPS 24x because I had heard so many rave reviews on it

for a few months or so it burned my media nicely, finishing most CDs in a little over 4 minutes. however, in the past 2 months, it seems like its gotten 75% slower...

instead of consistently burning 4 minute for a ~650mb divx/audio cd/etc... everything takes about ~6:30...

its really really bugging me because all other variables are the same!!! despite toggling the burn speeds from 12 to 16 to 20 to 24x... the burning speed is always roughly the same 6-7minutes. so i suspected that i had a bad batch of Imation CD-Rs or that they couldnt handle the 24x... so i used a few of these disks in my friends noname/rebadged US Pacific 40x drive burning at 40x speed and it finished every cd in about 3 minutes... what is making my drive run slow?

I checked QPS' website for FIRMWARE updates... or just a standard firmware so i can REFLASH the drive but alas they dont have any for the 24x10x40 cd-rw drive ... tips?

media: imation cd-r... short dye strategy
aspi: nero aspi 2.0.1.50
os: windows xp pro sp1
burning software: always latest full version of nero (currently 5.5.9.17)
media: 4 spindles of imation disk ive been using forever
mobo: same epox mobo, main HD on primary master, burner set to secondary master
bios and windows dma settings: DMA33, etc etc, all optimum settings
etc etc etc, nothing's changed

So your burner is running in DMA mode? Under device manager > IDE Controllers > Secondary IDE Channel > Advanced Setting > Transfer Mode?

If not try deleting your Secondary IDE channel and restart. After restart it will reinstall and enblaed DMA. My Liteon 12x slowed down considerably for no reason occasionally. Found out it was set to PIO and simply selecting DMA if available didn't get it workign back on DMA after the restart. But deleting the entire channel did.

Hope that helps.

also, I run HD on it's own channel (IDE 1) & burner/dvd rom on (IDE 2). I heard IDE splits it's bandwidth on whatever's being used on the same channel. Maybe separating the CDRW and hdd will help speed things up. Don't forge to set your jumpers again if you decide to move them!

the BIOS shows that its runnig at either PIO4 or 5 (i forgot)... but in windows i set the secondary channel to "DMA if available" and it shows that it is currently running at DMA mode 2...

also, the source (hd) and burner ARE on separate IDE channels so the 2 devices are indeed able to run concurrently without bandwidth limitations... ill try deleting the channel under windows anyways =x
