My laptop has 1 gig and I thought I'd go to 2 gig, but I'm wondering if there's any chance the motherboard will support 2 x 2 gig, and how would I know? Sandra says it supports only 2 gig. :( Also, what about memory architecture? Will almost any combo work? Oh, and can I go to 266mhz? I have my eye on a couple of sticks at newegg....
Thanks,
Robert

Have you bothered looking up your laptop's model at the manufactur's web site to see what memory it supports and how much? Typicly a few minutes on Google will yeild this information as well.

mpilch:

Yes, I know what memory is recommended (pc2700 at 166) and is in the machine. Sandra also gave me the timings and voltage.

The issues are:

1. What memory architecture will it support in 1 gig sticks?
2. Should I bother trying 2 x 2 gig sticks. Some motherboards will actually address more memory than advertised, which seems odd I know.
3. Would I be ok using something like PC2 5700 at 667: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820145157 and is there any benefit?

This is a Toshiba laptop, so Toshiba is not very forthcoming about information on their website because they want to see their over-priced ram.

That's DDR.

If the specifications state 1 GB per slot max, i would certainly agree.
I'd say the chances of an old chipset running 2 GB DDR SODIMMs is nonexistent.

You cannot run DDR2 in a DDR board.

Basically, you need to find something either PC2700/PC3200 in 1024 MB DDR SODIMM form.

At least that's what i can make out from what you are saying...next time just list the exact model or link us to the specs, as it's hard to figure out what you are talking about when you've given little info on things, not even the chipset.

The chipset will run ddr or ddr2 per SiSoft Sandra.

It's a Qosmio G15, with specs here: http://reviews.cnet.com/laptop...7-3121_7-31138488.html and here: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi...hgdmcgfkceghdgngdgnj.0

I note that Toshiba only lists ddr. Hmm....you may be right. Blimey!

Thanks for your reply.
