try this:

click on the start menu, and right click on programs,Accessories,Accessability,Utility manger and select properties. Under the shortcut tab there is an entry for shortcut key, make sure it is set to None, and not U..
 
I'm sorry but every-time I see a thread like these (there have been a few where the key doesn't work, for example the SPACE BAR) I just can't stop laughing at how funny the posts look.. LMAO...
 
I've hard a lot of problems with Win 2K and my IBM PS-2 keyboards (the ones that weigh 5 pounds). I dunno, but Win 2k often times "looses" the keyboard drivers, making it rather difficult to log in. Reboots usually help, as they did in your situation.
