QAM Support = Digital Over the Air Support?

Now that I've discovered that most HDTV tuners a la this one have VGA support, I think I'll be ditching my SIIG Pro-DVR for something like this.

My only concern is with the upcoming digital broadcast migration. Does QAM support mean that I'll be able to get digital over the air without any additional hardware?

So, then when the analog connections cut off, what would that mean for me and a dual tuner HD reciever? 😕

Won't they use QAM or some other currently known standard to do the analog cutoff?

Um, what? OTA high definition channels already are digital. That's what an ATSC tuner means.

I believe OTA broadcasts use 8-VSB modulation, so there's no reason they'd need to use QAM. (This applies for both HD and non-HD digital channels.)

If you're buying an HDTV to be as future-proof as possible, you want...

Native res to be 1080P
At least one HDMI input capable of receiving a 1080P signal
ATSC Tuner
QAM Tuner
CableCard Reader.

I wouldn't buy unless it has at least all of the above.

You can get digital OTA already, without QAM as others have mentioned. When they stop broadcasting analog, it will change nothing for the people that are already receiving the digital.

Ahhh, ok. That makes a lot more sense. Thank you.

Is there a tuner you'd reccomend with VGA and DVI out that does that? I've been leaning towrads the ViewSonic HD12. Cable card 1.0 is becoming obsolete and is being left off of set top boxes. I don't think there's anything in the pipes for cablecard 2.0. I really don't want cable anyway, so I'll probably skip on that feature.

What's the advantage of HDMI input of 1080P aside from Blueray/HDDVD support down the pike?
