Q9650 upgrade and computer freezes

Just upgraded the E8400 machine in my sig with a Q9650 and right after installation of the new chip, I turned the pc on to boot into windows only to get to the desktop and have the system completely hang up. Foced shutdown only had the machine freezing at the post screen.
Took out both video cards to access the jumper pin to reset board, and got system to boot again, made it to desktop fine, but when I went to run defrag, the system froze again. Anyone have any ideas that may point me in the right direction before I freak out!!??

Alright, thought that maybe I had applied to much AS-5 to the cpu, and decided to pull the cooler off. the ac-5 had smooshed out to touch the bracket that holds the cpu down. Didn't think that was a biggie, but pulled the chip anyway and cleaned all traces of the compound off with the 2 part cleaner that Arctic Clean has. I re-applied new thermal compound using the AS-5 ceramique this time, and just used a very small dot in the center of the cpu (uncooked grain of rice). Finished installing everything ,and got it all plugged back in, hit the power button, and bam, booted right to the post screen. so I hit delete to enter the bios. No problems at all. CPU is showing correctly in the bios, ram, and ram timings are fine, so I save and quit. Completed booting and went to the desktop. I ran the task manager, and all 4 cores show up on the task manager and still no problems. then the second I clicked on Firefox, the system froze again. Don't know if i have a bad chip or if anyone knows of any hardware compatibility issues between this board and chip. Just trying to figure out what to do. will try to re-install the E8400 and see if the system is any more stable. Before I did this, it was rock solid, and never had a single issue. And update the thread. Thanks again for the space ATOT! And if anyone out there has any ideas, by all means throw them out there!!

Yeah, definitely make sure your BIOS is up to date, as that board (assuming P5N-D in your signature) did not originally support your CPU.

not all motherboards support quad core chips. i have a bunch of the free bundled motherboards and most of them only support the 95w quad core chips that are expensive and hard to find

9550 and Q9650 are 95W TDP quad cores and are the most expensive ones from the Core 2 Quad series, but you can find a cheap Q8200 series (95W TDP) for less than $130.00 used on ebay.

just getting back here. updated the bios with the latest 1401 revision from asus website, and the pc is still locking up. I sent the processor back and just got the replacement yesterday, got it swapped out, system started up fine and booted to the desktop, I hit the task manager to monitor the 4 cores, and it was running fine, then bam. Frozen again. had to do the forced shutdown by holding the power button, and the it froze up while re-booting. I put my E8400 back in, and no problems.....works perfect. this is making me nuts...and making me want to spend money. somebody save me!!

Asus P5N-D is a NF
When quads came out there there were many probems with NF mb.
Example Evga fix was to give 680 owners a new 780 for 75.
The 780 was better but still had to many quad problems.
If I remember right there was some sort of a voltage change on the quad mb.
So even a updated bios didnt help.
My e8400 c0 was faster then my e8400 e0 on a 680nf.
Put 8400 E0 on a intel and it hits 4500@1.43
Wish you luck with the P5N-D.
