Q9650 to Core i5 750

The performance gains will not impress you. In single threaded scenarios, the gains comes from Turbo Core and slighly improved IPC, and aren't breathtaking to notice a difference. In multi threaded scenarios, what gives the i7 the edge is Hyper Threading, which the i5 750 lacks. Just overclock your CPU and wait until the new generation of Intel/AMD processor arrives. There's no scenario currently, even in heavily multi threaded software, than a full fledge i7 can be twice faster than your current CPU, and even less with a Hyper Threading less i5 750.

Look there and see all the results. I posted the heaviest ones with lots of multi threading.

It's barely an upgrade. Only the i7 980X can offer you twice the performance, but too expensive. I recommend you to just wait until a real sucessor to the i7 comes, the i7 is a relative of the Conroe architecture back in 2006.

At the same clock speed, how much performance do you gain?

that would be very dependant on the number of gpu's you intend to run.

If you a single gpu user, then i dont think you'll see much benifit.
If your a multi gpu user, then you will love the flexibility of having both sli and xfire support under 1 board.

other then that, u probably wont notice much difference between the two.

The sata3 might help if you intend to go on SSD's as well as the ICH10R over the ICH9.

And you would get usb3.0

You wont see 22nm for a while, and Sandy Bridge from what im hearing is not for overclockers yet.
ITs more focused on power saving features and "Green" peace thoughout the world.

If you can get one at a good deal, then id say just the multi gpu platform flexability would be merit to it.

Thats if your a gamer.

"At the same clock speed" - evo's post shows a slight edge to i5 750 at stock. Then overclock the i5 750 by +20% to match the Q9650's 3.33GHz, and it should have a clear lead (then factor in turbo on/off). A 4GHz-to-4GHz comparison of solid overclocks (i5 750 +50%, Q9650 +20%) would be interesting 🙂

As others stated, not much. However, consider the fact that the upgrade will likely you cost very little (less than $50) - you might even make some money depending on your existing board. The Q9650 sells used for well over $200, which is the going rate on the i5 750. Assuming your LGA775 motherboard isn't a very low end matx, you can probably sell your Q9650, board, and DDR2 for as much as the cost of an i5 750, lga 1156 board, and DDR3...
