Hi to all you gods of the OC world.

I am as you may have guessed a newperson to the quad world.

A few days ago my trusted and worth while friend an E8400 went to a well earned rest in CPU Heaven, so I decided to purchase a Q9650, this then produced another problem, my MB (Gigabyte N650SLI-DS4L) did not want to recognise its new partner, so I then got this Asus P5Q (always served me well with AMD?s). All seemed well until I ran CPUZ, this is showing with only 2 Cores and only 2 Threads .
Also
L1 Data = 2x32Kbyte
L2 inst = 2x32Kbyte
Level 2 6144Kbytes
Selection = Processor #1 (can not select anything else)
Everything else looks good.
Bios is recognising the cpu correctly.

I have been on numerous sites to see if anyone else has had this problem, but no luck, so I have decided to give you guys an oppurtunity to help a newcommer.

Asus P5Q Pro
INTEL CORE 2 Quad 9650
NEXUS LXM-8200 SILENT 775 COOLER,
XMS6400 4GB (2X2GB) 800MHZ,
SPOINT 750GB 7200 SATAII 32MB ,
ASUS GEFORCE 8800 GT 1GB
ANTEC NINE HUNDRED
HIPER 4M630 630WATT PSU
Vista 32

I had the same problem when I went from an E7200 to a Q6700. You need to write in the search bar "msconfig" enter. Then go to "boot//advanced options" and untick the "number of processors" option. Press "ok" and then reboot. After this you should have your all four cores. ;)

That seems a little overboard for a processor upgrade.

He also changed is motherboard if you payed attention. And its two different chipsets with completely different drivers. I'm surprised it even booted.

Sure, get the x64 RC of 7 ultimate, you will be happy. Make sure your peripherals have vista x64 drivers first though.

I crossed from an Nforce 570 AM2 mobo and a 4000+ x2 to a P35 and an E7200 cpu and I didn't need to uninstall windows. All I did was to uninstall all the drivers, for everything, change the mobo and cpu, boot and install the newest drivers for the latest components and everything ran like a charm.

You don't always have to reformat just to change motherboard/CPU.
http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=29&threadid=2275658

I went from 939 to 775 without a reformat (with sysprep). One of my friends went from a P4 to a Core2, changing mobos in the process, without even using sysprep, and he didn't reformat either (though he had to renew his Windows license before he could boot all the way).

True, but it's good practice. The point is if you are having problems after changing motherboards, you shouldn't be asking questions before you've done a complete install from scratch.

OP, even though your core problem is solved you should still reformat, unless you know exactly how to remove all nforce drivers from your system. Driver Sweeper can help you.

same, i am shocked it booted, ALWAYS reinstall windows after switching out a motherboard...

Also, upgrade your motherboard bios, you need to for it to support the latest CPUs. (just because it was purchased "new" doesn't mean it hasn't sat in a box in the factory for 2 years).

be warned that there is NO WAY to upgrade a windows from an RC version to a final version.. this means that if you install win7RC you WILL need to reinstall it when it is finalized.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that specifically for the boot up of the system?

Yes it is. For some reason it retains the last configuration you had, even though you've changed your hardware. So, you have to refresh his memory. ;)

I would always do a fresh install of the OS with a new mobo/cpu as jag said in his advice.

It was just common practice for me, but I've installed windows maybe 50 times over the years. These days I don't get a chance to be an enthusiast as much, so i just stick with factory OS install on my laptop, and refrain from changing too much hardware. However, when I did swap hardware, I usually did a fresh OS install just to be safe.
