Question Q9650 on Win10

Was thinking of making use of my old Q9650 rig. Maybe as a streaming device or something. I have a TV that doesn't support Disney + . I am using my FireTV box with it but I also have another TV that is super old that would welcome a quiet little streaming device. I figure it's better, right now, than buying a device off the e-market. *Will Windows 10 support my old Q9650? Or was I reading Windows 7 won't be supporting older CPUs?

It's got 8Gb, and a couple of 500GB HDD drives

Thanks for your time :)

The CPU itself will run 10. Depending on which GPU you have in the system, you could be in for a rough ride. C2D/Q-era IGP? Just forget-about-it, you'll need a newer GPU. Fermi, GCN or newer will do. TeraScale2 in a pinch.

10 has a somewhat unofficial requirement of needing a DX11-capable GPU to run well, and have proper driver support.

Bout to head up to Micro Center for some O-rings for my keyboard; how does this SSD look for the Q9650?

Its an Asus P5Q Premium. It's crazy, has like 4 ethernet ports, 10 SATA ports, 10 USB ports, PS/2 port.

The GPU is a fanless card, HD6450? Been so long since i bought it and it sat for longer. I think it has HDMI, also.

I think the sound card is a PCI Creative X Gamer?

The ram is some G.Skill Pi or TT super low latency for that era, DDR2 900 cl4.4.4.12 @ 2.1v F2-7200CL4D-4GBPI-B

I disagree with sticking with Windows 7. Sooner or later, there's going to be Yet Another Windows Exploit/Worm, and Windows 7 won't get a patch. Especially considering he wants to use this as a "Streaming box", and sooner-or-later most content streamers get "exploratory" as far as streaming sites go, and some... are less secure than others. Enough about that.

Get a GT 710 or 730, or even a GT 1030 2GB GDDR5 (or a GTX 1650, if some gaming too), and install Windows 10. Windows 10 is fine with that CPU, but the GPU needs to be up-to-date. iGPUs (mostly chipset) of that era are a big no-go, especially for watching video online.

And yes, that BX500 SSD is fine too.

Some FYI stuff if anyone is interested-

A few comments based on my hands on experience with windows 7 of late.

While official support ended, they still update security essentials, that continues until 2023. ESU (extended security updates) program is for biz only, has an annual subscription costs, and also expires in 2023.

I have 7 pro sp1 on a old Phenom II system, installed from a retail DVD I have had since shortly after sp1 released. It did hundreds of updates to get it to 2020 EOL. Malwarebytes latest version would not install. But an older version will, and still gets updates according to the staff. I will confirm this the next time I hook it up to the internet.

Comments on using win 10 pro on a 10 year old Phenom II.

I had no problem using the GeForce 7025 + nForce 630a with the drivers 10 provided. I did not spend much time on the IGP, but it loaded this site, and I was able to play GTA III or SA on it, forget which.

And I agree with Larry, add a modern GPU to update the media capabilities. I used a GTX 1070 and it handled the HD playback duties. Without it the Phenom would drop frames and have issues with 1440p, with the 1070 it would have less than 30 percent CPU usage for the same content.

I was running a Q9650 w/8GB on windows 10 until October, machine still work just been retired. Widows 10 runs fine on it and felt faster on win 10 vs win 8.1

Considering my Q9550 is happily chugging away in the hands of a family member...yes. It will be fine.
For general usage, it was a better overall experience than using our Broadwell based laptop.

I ran a Samsung 830 128 with mine as the OS drive. Prior to giving it away, it had a Samsung 830 128 (OS), 2 Sandisk ultra's 500's and a WD black.
Just remember that P45 will not allow that ssd to run at rated speeds so expect disappointing benchmarks. HOWEVER, in actual usage you won't notice any difference. Based on the the age of the platform, memory latency and speed isn't really going to be as much a big deal from an end user perspective.
In general usage, it will fell the same with cheap crap memory or with high end memory.

I believe the HD6450 will work, just need to grab legacy drivers.
I'm assuming you might have to go through some song and dance in safe mode to keep windows from installing the signed driver allowing you to install the correct driver.

To simplify things, I would remove the creative x during initial Windows 10 load.

Prior to me giving the Q9550 in early 2020, within 2019-2020 I had a GTX570 in it and then a GTX780 which I pulled and finally stuck a HD7770 in it. I don't recall what build of Windows 10 it was on.
Currently runs like a champ.
Q9550 on windows 10 Pro
gigabyte ep45-ud3p
HD7770 (also had gtx570 and then GTX780 recently)
8gb ddr2- 800 (whatever it is. might be Crucials...don't recall)

I added the 240(?) GB version of that to my Q9650. Huge performance boost even though it cannot use the full speed of an ssd. I highly recommend you get an ssd.
