q9450 questions...

i was planning on buying a q9450 but i've been reading stuff and people are saying that they don't really work as good as they're supposed to on a p35 motherboard. is this true? it's a gigabyte... GA-P35-DS3L/S3L and i have 4GB of PC6400 ddr2....sooo, i dunno.
also aren't they supposed to be going on sale today? i'd rather get one at a decent price right when they go on sale than pay $50 more after they restock later.

what do you mean by don't really work as good as they are supposed to? if you mean they won't overclock the fsb like a dualie, you're likely right there , given the stress 4 cores puts on the northbridge. also, i couldn't get my 9450 quad to boot on my gigabyte p35 ds4 so i went with an abit ip35 pro instead

so assuming that your p35 ds4 is better than my ds3, do you think i could possibly run into the same problem? i don't really know much about computers as this will be my first build... also i don't really plan on overclocking right away cause i need to do more research about it.

well, they should basically be equivalent aside from my feature set on mine...here's what i think needs to happen for a quad core 45nm to run on the gigabyte..i think gigabyte needs to get off their lazy lying butts and actually release a bios that works with the quad penryn. i can't speak to whether a dual core penryn will have the same issue or not. if i sound a bit pissy about gigabyte, i am..they've had about 3 bios releases where the data info on it says it's 45nm quad compatible. i swapped out a perfectly good p965 ds3 to get the p35 ds4 because it was advertised as quad penryn compatible. i tried every bios gigabyte has available for this board and not a sniff it would work. i've been a gigabyte fan for a long time. i never say never, but i'll certainly be looking everywhere else before i buy another gigabyte board again after my latest experience

OK Wow! That's disappointing as my GA-P35-DS3L just arrived this week and I expected it to be able to boot. So what's the solution? Do I have to put in another L775 processor to boot it then eventually update the BIOS?

jrussell, exactly. with my abit ip35 pro, it would not boot with the current official bios either, but at least they didn't lie about it working like gigabyte did..and they have 3 beta bioses that will boot a quad penryn fine and have since before i ever got my 9450. i used my 6400 dualie to boot into the abit bios, did the update and never looked back

yeah, how does that work? if you have to update the BIOS then you need to be connected to the internet to download the update don't you ? i have no clue...hehe. hmm. unfortunately i don't have another processor. unless it's possible to take the one out of my parents computer and use it just to update the BIOS and then put it back without causing a problem on their computer.
also, i am now looking at the BIOS update downloads for the P35-DS3L they have different versions from F1-F8a. do you know if downloading the latest (F8a) will take care of all the previous problems? and i'm guessing using another processor to update before switching to the q9450 is the only way...

if it uses a 775 socket, that'll work yeah, the gigabyte windows flash program works fine, unlike the abit one which is dicey..i needed to hook up a spare floppy drive and do it old school i never ran into a problem updating a bios using gigabyte's online flash program on 5 different boards

I updated to bios 14 on my ip35 pro the other day in anticipation of tossing in a Q9450 at some point in the near future. Are you saying that I need a newer beta bios? According to abit's literature this bios is supposed to work with a penryn quad core.

see this list from the abit site? no 9300 to 9550 on it and yeah, you'll need one of the 3 beta 16 bioses to run it..version b04, b09 (i've tried both those and the 9450 will boot fine) and now, b10.

There's a sticky with Beta BIOS releases for a bunch of boards, including the various IP35 editions. In theory, Abit is expected to release an official, final version when the official release day for the CPUs arrives.

By the way, IP35s can boot from a Flash drive if you don't have a floppy!

I caved in and installed a floppy a few months ago when one of my ram sticks died anyone else have an eta on Q9450's that is more exact than "early april"?

an official bios from abit for this? c'mon...stop teasing me and i did set up a flash drive following some instructions and using that hp utilility for when a bios arrives that i hope is much better than the current ones, official or beta..but i haven't had the guts to try to see if it will flash properly that way for me, or not

that sucks...i think they're just trying to sell more q9650s though i don't see how that would help since someone who is looking forward to the q9450 wouldn't spend an extra $700 just to get something a few weeks early. rabble rabble rabble!!!

i did a long search earlier...all i'm finding is march 17th.."later", or "april". nothing more definitive..i'm hoping for y'all that you see it hit retail tomorrow...on other hand..if you can wait a bit more after they come out, i'd recommend doing so...i don't think they are going to be all what many think they are cracked up to be based on my experience..if i was doing it again, i'd wait for some other suckers to buy them and see what the oc's are really like

I'm not expecting crazy oc's, anyway, I just want 425-450 fsb and I'll be happy. I'm hoping to keep the total thermal output similar to that of my e6750 on DC 24/7...

just remember though..the expectations with the 8400 have largely been met in terms of what they can do. i don't expect that'll be the case with the 9450's for most people interested

That's interesting. I am looking to purchase a IP35 PRO and a Q9450 within the next month or two. I don't have any spare LGA775 processors lying around.

Could I buy a cheap Celeron, use it to do the BIOS upgrade, and return the CPU? Has anyone tried this?
