Hi,

I just read that Intel will now phase out the Q9450.

Link: Intel to update desktop CPU lines in 3Q08

Does anyone here know why they do this?

I just bought a Q9450 (haven't used it yet - waiting for the rest of my hardware to arrive), but I'm just curious why Intel are doing this? Any problems with the CPU or something like that? Sounds weird to pull it off the shelves just as it became available.

They're replacing it with a slightly better model, the Q9550 (.5 higher multi). They're also replacing the Q9300 with the Q9400, also increasing the multi by .5. They're just repositioning their Quad line, there's nothing wrong with the previous 45nm quads, they probably just aren't selling as many as they had initially assumed.

they aren't MAKING any of them and most that slip out are sold for over msrp. They're bumping up the multis to entice more people to upgrade b/c nehalem's imminent arrival will most likely get people to wait.

Interesting news... That'd explain why I was back-ordered indefinitely directly through Intel's employee store... Oh well... We'll see what q308 brings this year for CPU's and their prices...

Good thing they suckered a sucker like me to buy the Q9450 right away! Hmpf.

Ah well, I didn't mind paying more for it since I do a lot of photoshop work and it owns the Q6600 in the benchmarks. I also don't plan on OCing much.
