Q9300 Temps

I'm running a q9300 with a thermal right ultra 120 extreme and a scythe sflex 1600 rpm fan. The temperatures im getting seem way too high though. At idle my 4 cores are at 47,53,56, 53 (using coretemp). At load they are right around 63. Any ideas as to why these are so high or is this the norm for these chips? I'm thinking of getting some new case fans to try and get some more air moving in my case, but im not sure how much it will help.
 
Its good to see someone in the same situation as me. The temps are not reading correct. I have the exact same setup as you on an Gigabyte DS3L. My load is 60, 60, 59, 60 which is the same as my 8800GTX and the GTX is hot compared to the ultra 120. Hopefully some more people will post if they are having the same problem.
 
All the 45nm chips seem to run hot.. The dual cores are exactly the same. I think either the temp is just bugged or it's reading it differently than the previous ones.
The best thing to do is look at coretemp and tell it to show temp distance to TjMAX. That would be the easiest way to compare temperatures although you don't know exactly what the real temp. is, all cpus should report the same tjmax.. For instance my dual core reports about 50C to TJmax under load. Some programs tell me that temp is 60C, some say 53..46.. but every program that I run and tell it to show distance to tjmax reports the same value, so using that value is the best way to compare temperatures with others since it is consistent over all programs.
 
core temp incorrectly reports tjunction as 105c. use realtemp, it shows tjunction as 95c and appears to be more accurate. They both report the same delta to tjunction, however, and the most correct usage of either program is to simply have it report "delta to tjunction". It's confusing but you get used to it after a while 😉

btw, your reported temps in coretemp are are normal for stock @load. they are very similar to mine at load with a tuniq in an antec 900 case.
 
Is there somewhere I can read more about this? Im assuming delta to tjunction is the same as distance to TJ Max on realtemp. On realtemp im getting 36 43 46 43 which seems more accurate. If I get some more air moving through my case I'm guessing I can get them down to something more reasonable in the mid 30s. bryanW1995, what exactly do you mean by reading the delta? I dont know what im looking for in it. Thanks.
 
Delta to Tjunction yes that's tjmax.. Just give us those numbers and it will be good
You really want to stay >40C from tjmax if you can.. IMHO.. Mine is running at 43C and 50C to tjmax.. my HS must be not quite flat because of the difference in core temps so I'm going to redo it later tonight.. I'll up the voltage until both cores are about 45C to tjmax with all the fans at full blast, etc. and see how high I can go mhz wise and then back it down a little.. Most people are getting 1ghz overlock on E8400 but I'm not sure mine will do it without supreme CPU voltage 🙂

yes dist to tjmax is same as delta to tjunction. coretemp and realtemp should display the same number here. here's a great thread about this whole temp issue.

Well if the cores are running hot than my heatsink should be hot too or else there would be no point to have one. But like I said load 70C on my GTX feels hot to the touch. Load 70C on my intel at the base of the heatsink feels luke warm.
 
9650 at 27/27/50/52, mini Ninja fanless. HS is cool to touch. apparently, something wrong with thermal diode. It runs cool.
 
Full load im getting 45 41 39 41 on the Delta TJMax. Seems alright... I think I can do better than that though. Is it worth redoing the HS? Or should I just get new case fans? This is at stock 2.5 ghz with the ultra 120 extreme

Idles at 45, under load it goes to 48-49............. You sure you attached your cooler correctly? I thought I was running warm till I read your post. :/

Dude those are messed up coretemps. The delta between cores is way too high.

what kind of "load" do you have that only increases the temps 3-4c??? All c2d's that I've owned went up 15-20c under load. One of those c2d's is on a zalman, too. My X3350 goes up 17-18c on all 4 cores under load with my tuniq.

lmao its almost an impossibility bryan your correct.

Not even water could pull off a 3C delta from idle to load. He's taking idle and load temps at different points.

Yea I thought it was weird too, I have never had a CPU do this before, have such a small difference. But I have played COD4, Bioshock, and Fear for a few hours and then looked at the temps. It only goes up 3-5C. I am here scratching my head I have tried different programs to monitor it and they all are reporting the same thing. Weird but cool I guess.

I was worried at first because it idles between 43-48 but under load it barely goes anywhere. heh
 
no, it's not "cool", it's "impossible". either there's a software glitch or, more likely, your monitors on the cpu itself are not working properly. That is unfortunately supposed to be very common on the 45nm cpus. What mobo are you using?

Whats a MOBO, no I kid, I'm using a Asus P5N-E SLI w/Latest Bios.

I have not run coretemp yet though, maybe it will shine some new light on this. I'll run it today and report back with my info. Hopefully we will have some more normal results.

EDIT I am using a Antec 900 also. 🙂 I'll try realtemp too!

EDIT 2 tried a few more seems to say 40c at idle and 53 under load thats a little bit more normal. I think I like speedfan the most of them all though,
 
I just installed an ASUS P5E3 Deluxe/WiFi-AP motherboard with the Q9300 (BIOS revision 1109) and Artic Cooling Freezer 7. When I go into BIOS, it shows the Q9300 temp at 43C.

 
I'm getting very strange readings from my q9450 (using realtemp):

idle

core1: 53c
core2: 54c
core3: 35c
core4: 35c

full load (occt'd)

core1: 62c
core2: 62c
core3: 47c
core4: 49c

I would of guessed that my hsf is not making sufficient contact (non coplanar), but the Trise is pretty much tracking with one another, so i think it's the sensors (common)....
