Hi all, what would be the best among those 3 for the best performance\power consumption\cost effectiveness\longevity compromise?
I'm not a gamer or an overclocking fan, but I do need some performance for OS virtualization, multi booting and such, while keeping things cool, quiet and power consumption low. The difference in price between the Q9300 and the Q8200 is pretty marginal, the Q8200 seems to be slowest of the 3, while the Q6600 is almost 25% cheaper, but it consumes more. Which one should I choose?

And while we're at it, which mobo should I choose? I'm thinking Asus P5E

Thanks!

Why would we be informing the moderators about this message? Anyway, you definitely don't want the Q8200; it doesn't have anywhere near the virtualization capabilities of the Q9300 or the Q6600, because it lacks the Virtualization technology that the other two processors have. Which motherboard is best for you will depend on a number of things, including the features you're looking for, price, among a few others. Welcome to anandtech, BTW.

Thanks for replying myocardia, I don't get the moderators thing, what do you mean?
Yes I agree with you about the 8200, I read about the lack virtualization technology and the smaller cache. As far as the motherboard, I'm mainly looking for low power consumption and low price :)

My guess is it was an errant copy/paste.

Might want to to edit your title 1speed :)

Anyway, to address the question at hand, what's most important to you? Price? Power consumption? etc. Also, are you overclocking? My recommendation would be for the Q6600 no matter what. Not only is it the cheapest, it also will (statistically) overclock and perform the best. Once overclocked, the power consumption/heat output differences between the CPUs isn't much.

Go for the Q9300. You seem to want to keep this processor for a long time, in which case if you pay the electric bill then the Q9300 would probably make up the cost difference from the Q6600 in electricity bill savings. It also performs better.

Do you want a board with integrated graphics?

Ok finally got it, just edited the title, dunno where that came from, a paste error I guess :)

Going back to the topic, I won't be doing any OC or gaming, so integrated graphics would be fine. So if I went the "cheap" route, get a q6600 and get a new pc sooner, what would be a good cheap mobo to buy? asrock? thanks
