Hi yall,
It is time to upgrade my E2200 machine and am thinking of the following options. Either a Q9300 ($99 at MC) with a P45 board, or a 560BE with an MSI 785G board ($100 combo from MC). What are your thoughts? I know the Q9300 is a guaranteed quad, but the BE could unlock into a quad core.

really depends on you.

Imo, the performance will be not too different if you o/c both of them and that Ph2 unlocks.

So safer way is definitely Q9300.
However, Why do we upgrade our "already fast enough" computers anyway these days.
to have some fun. And I think $99 PH2 will provide the much needed xmas nerd treat.

So , I vote for PH2 for pure fun.

yeah cause he's going to get a SB chip and mobo for $100, what dream world do you live in?

EDIT, forgot about the actual OP. I would go with the quad core of course, no gurantee that phenom will unlock.

Take my granddad for example. Excel, word, email and maths programs are pretty much all he uses. He is sitting on an old Core Duo T2450 @ 2.0Ghz with 4gb of ram and windows vista. The machine runs surprisingly well and he is in no hurry to upgrade.

There are people who use computes and there are people who USE computers.

Just like there are people who drive cars and people who DRIVE cars.

Just like there are people who bold-cap their typing, and people who just can't express themselves in text.

Just buy a PII X4 940BE for $95+Mobo for $60 and that'll leave you all set.

I just did something similar, $160 for a solid quad core processor + mobo? I would call myself crazy if i said that would happen a few years ago.

Today I bought a 555BE + a cheapazz Asrock motherboard (880GM-LE, the 770 Extreme I was aiming was out of stock).

Turned on the PC, big Asrock logo "press X for UCC turbo". I pressed. PC restarded and bam 4 cores at 3,4 GHz.

All that for the price of the 965BE I was looking for but was out of stock too.

Happy day! :)

Up too you mate - unlocking isn't guaranteed but oh so satisfying when you get it.

After some contemplation i realise that you both understood and found a meaning to my madness, otherwise you wouldn't have replied in such a way. Expression and interpretation go hand in hand - I guess we learn (although i subconciously knew this to be fact) something new everyday!

Core2 is a little faster per clock, and is a drop in upgrade. Go with that for sure. I love amd's quads more than most, but the core2 at that price is a steal. The Phenom isnt even a guaranteed quad. The risk of failure is not even close to the risk of an unlock.
