Q8200 running too hot?

I'm running a new Q8200 in a new system, stock speed.

CPU Fan:
Xigmatek HDT-S1283
http://www.xigmatek.com/product/air-hdts1283.php

Case:
Xclio Windtunnel
http://www.xclio.com/products/case-windtunnel.htm

Mobo:
Supermicro C2SBC-Q
http://www.supermicro.com/prod...re2Duo/Q35/C2SBC-Q.cfm

My problem is that I'm getting very high temperatures:

Idle:
55/42/48/49

Load (Prime95):
64/53/58/58

Now, that is with room temperature at around 29 (can't change it, sorry :(), and Case temperature (between the RAM) at around 38.

As you can see, I also have a disturbing amount of variation between the cores.

Fascinatingly enough, when I enable the mobo's "silent" mode for the CPU fan, it drops its speed from ~1400 to 870, but the idle/load temps only go up by around 1-3 degrees. And the fan never speeds up, even under load.

Do I need more thermal compound? I thought I had slobbered on too much, so I had removed about 1/3 of it before mounting the HS, however, the HSF base is not perfectly smooth - it has ridges for the heat pipe to directly contact the CPU.

I appreciate any suggestions you might have.

Have you tried to touch the base of HS to see if it is really warm? If it is warm then check your HSF installation.

I am using a Q8200 with ASUS P5E-VM as HTPC and HS is a mini Ninja without fan, only case fan. So it is passive. If I use coretemp to check tem, idle would be 37C, load (not 100%, around 40-50% for HD movie play back) is 42-45C. But if I use everest it reports about 5-6C higher. Idled at 42C and load 49C.

[EDIT]: just noticed your room temperate is 29C, that is kind of hot. My room temperature is only 21C. So I guess your temp is not bad. I think you can try to lower Vcore.

Ooo - no, I didn't try that strategy. - Thanks, I'll reapply tomorrow.

The base of the HS is quite cool - perhaps very slightly warmer, or I could be imagining it.
