Ive just ordered a system with a Q8200. However, I don't know if Im getting a R0 or a M1 steping and have no clue what they do. Im not overclocking so if one is locked and the other isnt then i dont care. How do you tell wich is which?

Hmm... I wonder why they have two stepings on a brand new procesor if they dont seem to be any different. I dont have the system yet but I wanted to know if i should ask for one or the other steping but it seems that there is no big diff either way.

The 5-letter codes indicate that it's being manufactured in 2 different fabs. There shouldn't be 2 steppings, though... where did you find that information?

Ok, that's bizarre. It's a brand new product (not even out yet?) and steppings normally indicate age. I would say that the difference in sleep states would be the desktop part vs. Xeon part, but Intel's site calls them both desktop parts.

R0 is like E0.
M1 is like C1.

At least based on the CPUID String.

I'd pick the R0 for overclocking.

If you're not overclocking, you might want to pick any of the boxed versions (M1), as they come with a cooler..

Dont forget Intels quads are just 2 dual core dies on one cpu package.

It's likely old stepping duals slapped into the Q8200s that dont have deep sleep... etc.

Yeah i still dont understand what the diference is since with hsf or oem version is usualy not shown by a steping! Very strange!
