Does anyone know if there are any price drops on the Q6700 scheulded before the end of the year? I'm trying to decide whether to buy at Q6600 now or wait a bit and get the 6700.

Thanks,
m

They *might* drop them on the launch of the 45nm CPUs, but i would imagine it would more than likely bank on if AMDs Barcelona is out and/or competitive.

A friend of mine works at Intel and said in about 7 weeks he can buy a Q6700 for $245. Not sure what they retail at right now but i know he can get the Q6600s for about $145 which is about 130 bucks off. So i am assuming that the Q6700s should be coming down in price unless they just give a HUGE price cut to employees for that CPU.

they do give their employees big discounts, but they are usually more along the lines of "early price cuts" than discounts. I heard many stories well b4 jul22 about intel employees getting q6600's for the "new" price, for example. If that is accurate then we might be seeing more price cuts sooner rather than later. Maybe intel is planning to undercut barcelona and just finish off amd once and for all.

everybody is probably going to wait until phenom comes out. amd has already stated that barc will debut at 2.0ghz. that is not going to be a threat to intel even if it has a 30% clock advantage over c2d (highly unlikely though possible). When phenom debuts there will some fallout for amd and intel both. If phenom debuts at 2.6 and has a decent clock4clock advantage over c2d or even penryn then there will most likely be very aggressive intel price cuts and faster-than-expected intel speed increases. If, as most of us fear/expect, phenom/barcelona is weaker than puppy piss, intel will probably increase prices or at least hold the line for a LONG time.

They everybody better go out and build an AMD box, unless you like paying 800 dollars for your midrange CPUs.

AMD made back 4% of market share last quarter with X2 chips. There is money to be made in lower-end and mid-markets, as well as server markets. I don't have the numbers on me but I think majority of users are still on single cores. A lot of them are budget customers who'll be looking to buy sub-$150 cpus. If AMD doesn't have the performance crown, it doesn't mean they won't be competitive. I think a lot of people forget that. The forums can often create a false misconception when every other person is buying E6750, 6850 and Q6600s. Those cpus probably make up top 10% of the market today. If you just want a dual core for general use and websurfing, it's hard to beat X2 3800+ for $65 or so.

Any updated info on this subject? About to pull the trigger on the Q6600 if there is no chance of a drop in Q6700 price by year's end.

thanks,

Wow, I'm surprised the Q6700 hasn't budged since the release of Penryn. I think intel is waiting for me to buy a Q6600 before lowering the price ;)

It almost begs the question as to why the quantum difference between the q6600 and q6700 in the Intel price schedule. Aren't we only talking about a difference of 0.26 Ghz?

It must be that with the pre-Penryn technology, you had to make 10 Q6600's just to get one Q6700 . . .

i'd like to know too, about to scoop up at 6600. Is the performance worth the wait?
