Q6600 temps seem high + weird issue

Hi all,

I got a B3 about two weeks ago, and I'm using the stock cooler on it on a DS3. It's not overclocked at all. The BIOS reports that the temperature is 40*C, SpeedFan gives me an average of 35.5*C, and CoreTemp gives me an average of 50.75*C.

Are the temps supposed to be this high at idle, and is it normal to have such variation between the different sensor utilities?

i would trust CoreTemp. the quad cores put out a lot of heat. i would recommend a 3rd party cooler. the thermalright ultra 120extreme is best but if you want something smaller i would go for the thermalright ultima-90.

Have you pushed your quad up to 3.0GHz? If yes, then can you post the reported PWM temp under Orthos as shown by the Abit EQ software in windows?

TIA,
F

I hope I could have time to OC it. Too busy at work. I barely found the weekend afternoon free to build my rig :)

anyway would report back if I did it

It's kind of a battle with my roommate, but I try to keep it around 80*F. The air conditioning system is kind of badly-designed, so it really won't go lower than that during the daytime.

I RMA'd it. Maybe I'll get a G0. I'll probably end up getting an aftermarket cooler anyway. Any suggestions? I've got an Antec mid-tower case.

i have the antec 900 case and my tuniq tower is doing great in there. anandtech did a review on the ultima-90 recently and I was impressed by its showing. i doubt that the thermalright ultra 120 extreme would fit in the antec case but i could be wrong.

My room temperature is 27C, my coretemp are around 49-53C at idle. I am using DS3 v1.0, B3 stepping. No OC with stock HSF. Is this normal?

BTW, I remove the original thermal pound and used Arctic silver 5.

I am going to install Tuniq Tower 120 and hope that would help. Was too lazy to install the monster.

All Antec midtowers are 8" wide, or wider. They'll all have no problems holding any of the taller heatsinks that we are always recommending to people around here. For instance, I have a Scythe Ninja in an Antec 3700-BQE (I think; it's a 3700-Bxx, anyway), and there's well over an inch of space between the top of the Ninja, and the side panel.

It seems that core temp is giving out incorrect temps with the Q6600's, your best bet at the moment is to go off your bios temps, a good way to compare your temps is to set the alarm to go off at 60 degree's increase the Vcore to bring up the heat a little and then open Coretemp and speedfan, run Prime95 and then soon as the alarm rings at 60 degree's check coretemp and workout what the correct temps.
