Hi Experts,

I just built a new machine a few days ago...

MB ASUS P5Q PRO 775 P45 RT
CPU INTEL|C2Q Q6600 2.40G 775
CPU COOLER XIGMATEK|HDT-S1283 R
CASE NZXT|CS-NT-TEM-B BK RT
PSU CORSAIR|CMPSU-550VX 550W

This would be my first time OCing so I have been reading the guides posted here in the forums (which are great). After getting Vista installed and running I brought up Prime 95 and Core Temp.

Running idle with no OCing being done the cores are hovering around 37C and at load 47C - 50C. I know the chip can handle temps up to 71C and maybe I am being paranoid, but I would have figured that with no OCing in place and a Xigmatek cooler these temps would be lower.

The case has 2 front fans, 2 top fans, 1 fan out the back, and 1 fan out the side. I have done some cable management to make sure there is proper airflow to the chip. The temp in my room is around 75F.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Haha sorry it was early in the morning for me.

Your system is almost identical to mine. Does this look right?

Any advice on OCing this setup?

Well, you're running a quad, which have twice the heat output of a duallie. So with that in mind, the temps don't seem out of whack or something to be concerned about. I wanted you to clarify whether it was a E6600 or a Q6600, because the idle temp would be a bit high for E6600.

I think the newer Q6600's run a bit hotter than the older ones because the vcore is quite a bit higher at 1.32. Mine runs at 3GHz (333x9) and idle is about 40C and full load encoding video 100% on all 4 cores is about 65C. That is with the stock cooler and very well ventilated case. I'm going to try lowering the vcore and see how that affects temps. My E4500 at 3GHz ran almost 10C cooler with the tiny little HSF it came with.

That's too high for that cooler (is it mounted correctly?)....i'm running 9x333 with ACF7pro load temps 48-50c

Seems high to me, and I thought the newer (G0) Q6600's actually ran cooler because their VID's were lower?

First thing you should try is taking the cooler off and using 1/2 the AS5 (or whatever paste you used) and re-measure the temps. People typically use more than what's needed and it ends up doing more harm than good. Worst case, you just go back to the amount you were using and you lost out on 15 minutes of tweaking.

Also, does it run at those temps with the case opened?

Thanks rbk... I will try that tonight.

Question... Is there a way to tell windows to use certain cores? My system seems to use cores 0 and 1 most of the time, and they are the cores that run hotter than the other 2. I'd like to have it use the 2 cooler running cores most of the time. The only programs I have that use all 4 cores are video encoding so it would be great to use the cooler running cores most of the time.

No, there isn't. Not that it would do you any good. The two cores that are hotter are hotter because they're running Windows and your video drivers, etc. You'd only be changing which cores were the hot ones.
