I'm buying a Q6600 and an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro for my rig. I also need to replace the stock HSF on a Celeron 430 internet surfer because it was running a wee bit warm for my liking. I figured the stock cooler for the Q6600 would be better than the one included with the Celeron so I thought I would buy the retail version and use the Q6600's stock HSF to cool the Celeron.

Q6600 OEM is $239.99 and retail verson is $254.99 at Newegg both with free shipping. Question, do you guys know of a CPU cooler at $15 or under (shipping inclusive) that works better than the Q6600's stock HSF? Needs to be short (SFF case).

Case dimension (Celeron 430 PC):
12.75" x 3.9" x 15.75"

Thanks!

For that small of an area, that price and usage, the stock q6600 cooler shoud be fine.

if you think that dualcore is hot for your liking. The quad will be a lot worse.

Get an aftermarket is my recomendation. The Q sinks arent like the QX9650 sinks. There not as massive.

The Q6600 will be getting an AC Freezer 7 Pro. The Q6600's stock cooler will be used on a single-core Celeron 430 as stock cooler for that is woefully inadequate and airflow is pretty much non-existent in the case (APEX DM-387). That is unless you have recommendations for a better CPU cooler at $15 or less that would fit inside my case.

How about an $11 one?

Anandtech(Wesley Fink actually)seems to think it's notably better than the stock HSF

I also forgot to mention, check warranties on them both, I believe that extra $15 buys you a longer warranty. I'm not 100% sure as I typically void the warranty on everything I buy within about a week.

Checked the dimensions. Someone told me stock Q6600 cooler is ~2.5". The Alpine 7 Pro is ~3.6" at best, at worst, it's more than 4". At 3.6", there's a possibility that I can't close the side door. At 4", it's definite that I won't be able to close the side door.

I saw reviews for a smaller (but less effective) Alpine 7 GT which would be a nice fit for my case. Unfortunately, I didn't find online stores in the US that were selling it for MSRP w/o jacked up S&H.

I guess I'm back to getting the box version of the Q6600. Thanks for the suggestion, anyway.

I heard him say it I was just wondering what case it was, the only case in his sig would fit any heatsink known to man so I was just curious.

i say always OEM - you don't really need the other stuff in the retail package, the cooler is not that great...even if you're not planning on overclocking, a really nice cooler and the OEM chip wouldn't cost you more than $20 at most over the retail price.

The Antec P182 is getting upgraded to Q6600+ACF7Pro.

Case is an APEX DM-387. It's basically being used for internet browsing and, well, internet browsing w/youtube. No oc'ing necessary. Would have underclocked it but just about the only thing I can change in the mobo is date/time, boot order, and num lock status.

APEX DM-387 w/275W PSU
ECS 945GCT-M/1333
Celeron 430 @ 1.80 GHz
Kingston ValueRAM DDR2 533 2x1GB
Western Digital Caviar SE 320GB
Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7190A

[start tongue-in-cheek]
Firefox works just fine. Youtube videos play smoothly with no stutters. :p

wow, that is a tiny case, the old lady has similar workstations at work that are just being used as terminals and the stock hsf BARELY fits. If you want something that'll cool better you'll have to look into like 2U heatsinks for 775, I don't really know if there are many if any though. I'm pretty sure you're going to be stuck with stock.

I'm kinda under a budget so I doubt I could spring for 2U heatsinks. While tiny, the case should still fit HSFs from AMD or Intel.

I think I read somewhere that not all HSFs Intel ships are the same. E6600 - Q6600 get the same HSF, but E6300 - E6400 get a weaker model. Weaker still is the one that ships with Pentium Dual-Core. Lowest of the bunch - Celeron 400 HSFs.
