Q6600 overheating P35 Northbridge????

Hi,
I took the advice of some forum members and went ahead and replaced my E6750 with Q6600 G0 CPU. My mobo is Intel DP 35 DPM. Since Windows XP picked up after a really long boot up, I just continued without re-installation.

I also have 2 320GB HDDs in RAID 1.

The Northbridge temps shot up 10-13 C without any significant stress at basically idle. Temps were touching 80 C. Could this be because I did'nt re-install Windows XP Pro SP2? I also flashed the BIOS to the latest release. , but this did'nt make a difference.

I therefore attached (rather clumsily with 2 makeshift ties) a small 5 V fan to one side of the heatsink, wedged narrowly between the memory module and Northbridge heatsink. The aim being to throw air through the heatsink fins. This promptly reduced the temp to 67-73 C.

Temps were measured with Intel Desktop utilities.

My questions:

1. Is this expected?
2. Will Windows XP need to be re-installed?
3. What kind of temps can the P35 handle without throttling?

Thanks,

M Javid

The P35 is designed to handle up to 105°C (got this from the official Gigabyte forums). I had a high temp as well, up tp 94°C on my P35 DS3, but no stability issues. If you're uncomfortable with that temp, you can get Thermalright HR-05 IFX to cool the NB, that's what I did.
Did you only change the CPU or also the motherboard? Because if you only changed the CPU there's no need to re-isntall Windows at all.

You're not going to be able to hit 480MHz with 94C NB. The upper limit for high FSB clock speed is just under 78C, plus/minus a few Cs.
