q6600 - one core idling 5-8° above the others

temps as of right now(idling) are 42, 37, 34, 34.

the first has always been the warmest, although i can't remember how much warmer before the OC and as5 application. as5 has only been on for ~ 2 hours; i know it takes time to set, but i am assuming that that core will still idle above the other three.

i know that some differentiation is normal, but 5-8°? something to worry about? should i go through the pain of taking the mobo back out and reapplying as?

a side note: the only reason i am using the stock cooler and, as it happens, applied as5 to it at all is because i bought a zalman 9500 that doesn't fit my rev. 1 965 ds3 :( apparently the 9500 i received is a new revision that comes with a clip that doesn't fit any way i turn the thing because of capacitors and such instead of a a fastener that screws on. oh well

Idle temps aren't something to worry too much about, if your load temps were like that it might be. Typically core 0 does most of the work while the other 3 cores are idle, unless an app is running, so it's common to have core 0 warmer than the other cores, that's why you use load temps to see if there's something wrong with the cooling.

not as bad as mine :\

mine's more along the lines of 71,71,61,61 - most likely due to concave IHS

Ooo a 10C delta, not nice, but I had 14C thanks to my cooler being so top heavy :D I run the system on it's side for now till I find the time to apply some IC7 and firmly attach the heatsink, now I have a 4C delta thanks to gravity and probably too much TIM.

And OP, that delta is fine at load.

A 4C delta hardly calls for a lapping, but it will probably lower temps overall, if not the delta at least.

11C eh? Indeed it does sound like a lapping job, I might lap my Q6600 and ChillTEC just for hoots and to get experience with it.

I did a piss-poor lapping job on the tuniq that I put on my q6600, but it only has a 3-4c delta in temps. my other tuniq and zalman (both not lapped) have 10c+ difference...grumble grumble...I see sandpaper in my future...

I wonder if there's any quad core with virtually no delta between the 2 halves. Mine has a 5oC delta at most like most people.
I never lapped any HSF or IHS... just too afraid if I borked it

Ah hell. You wont. Take your time and after it's all said and done, you will not regret it. :)

I did it and its pretty easy, just time consuming. Thats the good part, it's therapeutic.
