Thinking of going with a Q6600 and OC to 3.6 using the Asus P5K-E mobo. Was planning on buying 2GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800 ram. Will I be able to achieve my OC with that RAM?

Thanks,
Mike

I am doing pretty much the same thing Mike but I am using the Gigabyte P35 DS3R board. But I was thinking on using the 1066 memory. But I am not sure I need to. I think by going to the 1066 it gives some benefits by lowering the multiplier??? I am very new to this, as you can tell.

I was going to go with the Cosair Dominator memory but I am not sure if I really need to go to that level. So I was looking at the Crucial Ballistix 1066 also.

It will be interesting to see what the experts say...

Good luck.

Hey Jimmy,

I took the plunge and ordered the Q6600 GO stepping, Asus P5K-E along with the Ballistix DDR2 800. I have been reading a lot of posts and it seems a lot of people recommend these stixs to accomplish what I am trying to do.

Some other feedback I have received is "with the 9X multiplier, the Q6600 only needs a FSB of 400MHz to hit 3.6Hz, so the minimum speed memory that would work without overclocking is DDR2-800."

Now its just of matter of waiting patiently for the parts to arrive which is always the most difficult part. :)

Mike,

Without a doubt, ordering is the easy part, waiting kills you... lol

I had read probably the same post about the 800's would work so I have really been thinking about going back to 800's. I guess if you had the E6850 and OC it then you could use the 1066's?

Where did you end up ordering? I am going to order everything and really want to do it from one place...I am sure I could order here and there but then shipping would eat me alive. Right now I am looking at Newegg...but would be curious where you r ordering from...

Jimmy,

I ordered the memory and mobo from zipzoomfly.com. Right now there is a rebate on the Crucial memory so that was an added bonus. Newegg has the same rebate.

I ordered the CPU from ClubIT because what I read says they guarantee you the GO stepping where Newegg and Zip could not.

I ordered the Tuniq Tower 120 to cool the bad boy off from xpcgear because Newegg and Zipzoomfly did not carry it.

I live in NJ so sometimes Zipzoomfly is cheaper for me because they do not charge me tax where Newegg will because I live here. But when I do order from them I never had a problem. The prices from both are normally in range of each other.

The 800s will OC nicely if you need to but to reach some of the speeds with the Q6600 it sounds like there will be no need. But its a comfort to know if you needed to the Ballistix are up to the challenge.

So when you ordering! lol
