Q6600 making odd noise....

Well I have been messing around with Q6600 trying to get some OCing back into it. I had it running at 3.0ghz back in August, as my sig states, but it was getting a little hot in here so I had to set it back to stock. However, when I went to go set it back the processor now makes a strange noise. At first I thought I was going crazy, as I have never heard the processor it self make noise before, but I put my ear right up to it and it is defiantly the source.

Processor is the B3 stepping on the Q6600. Temps are about 57C under load @ 3.0ghz so it still should be in the clear heat wise. The noise itself can best be described as the sound a hard drive would make when its loading something. Honestly the noise itself isn't the issue, I just want to make sure that the processor isn't going to explode on me.

cpu isn't making noise.

noise is coming from the coils under the black squares around the socket. there isn't much you can do about it.

its defiantly not the fan/heatsink... I recently switched to a new HSF and I was able to hear the noise with both.

The noise could be as JAG87 said, and really I am fine with that as long as it isn't slowly killing anything.

Jag is saying its the mobo, which I suppose you could verify by swapping the CPU into another mobo if you wanted to be sure of the suspicion.

Don't really have another mobo to test it on so that option is out... Like I said, I really don't mind the noise but just want to make sure that noise doesn't mean something bad is happening.

I know what you mean... I started running prime95 and seriously thought something was gonna explode.

Does it sound similar to this?

no but i swear i was about to be sucked into the matrix lol

mines either coming from the black boxes or the MCP fan on my 780i... it seemed to go away with the fan so im not worried..

plus its running stable at 3.0GHz with no problems :)

heh. My Q6600 machine suffered a burning smell last week (PSU... I think, still worked fine). I took it and it's loud AMD 64 companion into another room, and started noticing a low volume noise coming from the CPU (not any of the fans). It comes and goes, and yeah "hard drive loading" sounds about right. Weird thing about my ghost sound is that if I go to www.amazon.com, and rotate one of their rotating flash animations, the cpu clicks rapidly and loudly... I really don't understand why that happens, and it doesn't happen under load (it's loud enough to be noticed over the fans).

Try turning Speedstep on (if it's off) or off (if it's on) and see if there is a difference. Most likely (as Jag pointed out) coil whine from inductors on the motherboard.

turning Speedstep on definately lessened the noise (especially the clicking regarding the flash animation), but it is still there... I suppose I can RMA the board and hope for better luck?

like an open can of pop.

Going to break out a pencil, see if I can determine if it's one of the chokes. if it is, glue should work, otherwise, I'll send it back
