Q6600 G0 at Frys.com for $179.99 + ship

Doh i just ordered this but at least I did it through Mwave's store on Ebay for 25% cashback 🙂

Whats the G0 though? It has something to do with OCing and stepping?

GO is the version of the chip. The first version was B3 and generally ran hotter, used more power and was considered a poorer overclocker. So getting a GO is considered a good thing.

While true that G0 stepping is the stepping to get, there should be no B3 stepping cpus in the retail supply chain any longer as the G0 came out months ago and the B3 stock should have been depleted well before now.

But there's more than just the stepping to consider in getting a good Q6600 for OC'ing. The batch number is equally important. The L7xx batches seem to be vastly superior OC'ers as compared to their L8xx batched brothers.....while the L7xx batched Q6600 cpus seem to hit 3.6GHz with ease and at fairly low voltages, the L8xx batches seem to struggle to even close in on 3.4GHz without huge increases in voltage and sometimes can never get to 3.6GHz, no matter how much voltage is pumped through them.

And then there is the VID voltage to consider of the cpu. Again, the L7xx batches seem to have the better VID voltages.....like 1.25V or 1.275....and lower VID's seem to lead to less vcore voltage required for OC'ing to whatever speed looking for. Contrast that to some of the VID's being reported on the poorer OC'ing L8xx batches of Q6600's....like 1.325V or the like.

There's a lot more to look for than just stepping in determining a good OC'ing Q6600 cpu.

Just bought a Q6700 .. might as well ignore this deal and suck it up. Congrats to those that get a good OC'ing one !

I just got a second Q6600, for my wife's machine - both of ours hit 3ghz on air no problem

Thanks Jessica69! I hope I get a good one. I got Xigmatek rifle cooler though and arctic silver ceramique and going into a 7 fan Xaser III case. I'm hoping to hit a modest 3.0ghz with ease.

I was holding out for a good price on a Q9xxx, but I'll settle for a second Q6600 at this price.

Good find, OP.

3.2 GHz - air.
However, I am using the Thermalright Ultra 120 that I bought some time back for a killer price that I just happened to find lying about. 😀😀😀

Edited:
Killer chip, Killer price!
Good find, V-Larry.

Do tell...

Hmm...I need a couple more Q6600's for upcoming builds next month...is the $150 price definite? I'll wait if it is!

I got the Q6600 for $150 through the ebay cashback. I just got it and its a G0 SLACR 🙂
The stock cooler is impressive looking but I still have a Xigmatek rifle cooler on the way.

I got my Q6600 up to 3.01ghz on the stock cooler, but it was starting to get a bit toasty. A good aftermarket cooler is definitely recommended, especially with a G0 chip 😉

Thanks Kaido. What app/tool do you use to OC? Last time I OC'd I just used the software gigabyte provided for my board.

I just used the MIT utility on my Gigabyte DS3L's BIOS. It lets you set the CPU multiplier to Manual and set Auto on the rest of the stuff so that you can tweak the multiplier really easily. I just kept going until it was unstable 🙂

Yes yes same with me I was hitting 70c after running Prime95 for an hour, got me a ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler and temps droped to 55 running Prime, oh and was hitting 3.0 with no voltage bump 🙂 I now run it at 3.2
