Hey guys,

This is my third topic in regard to my new computer, which I finally got running this evening (hooray!). I haven't got to install any real software (photoshop, flash, etc) but from doing the necessary windows updates and some diagnostics and benchmarking (like HD Tune) I can already tell this thing is going to be a beast.

Quick rundown: Q6600, 4 GB DDR2-800 Ballistix, X-FI Gamer, P35-DS3R, 320 GB Seagates, Enermax 500 Watt PSU and hopefully an EVGA 8800 GTS 640 mb. Housed in a Coolermaster Centurion 534.

Anyway, when I first put this thing together I got a POST beep error and no display. I looked up the code and it was a VGA error. So... damn it, I was stuck, and had a friend lend me his old X300. Fortunately that was the only problem and aside from having 32 megabytes of video memory my system works fine. Of course, this does present the issue that I spent $360 on a graphics card that's sitting on my shelf (or may be returned, RMA'd, etc).

Which is where I hope you can help :) When I first installed the gigantic 8800 GTS, I could tell that it wasn't seating right. The DVI connectors were at a slight angle, depressing inward at the side of the case away from the motherboard (closest to the door). The little plastic tool-less PCI secure-er thingies couldn't really hold it in either, so I tried using screws and it was still unhappy. No POST, just an error. Thinking the case could be the problem, I took the motherboard off of its screws and placed it on two pieces of cardboard then attached the GTS. No good either.

I made sure to plug in the secondary power to the card but that's all I did besides putting it in the PCI-E slot. Do you have to do something special aside from that? Do you think my card might just be fried or do you have any suggestions to make it render explosions and things?

Thanks much!

Hmm, good point. What if it works and I never get the card back? :)

Nah, I'm going to call EVGA right now and see what they have to say. If they don't have a solution I'll give my friend the card tomorrow and see what happens... I'm not sure he even has a PSU w/ VGA power connectors, but we'll see.

Thanks!

If he doesnt give it back you beat him with a wet trout, thats what. But in all honesty it seems like a bad card or you didnt get it seated properly. And for the future always use screws if you can, i dont trust those bracket things as far as i could throw em

I just called them and the tech support guy thinks my card isn't getting enough power. The card comes with an adapter to plug two 4-pin connectors instead of the single 12V plugs, which he says don't have enough amps to run the thing.

So.. new question. Is 500 watts enough for this system? He recommended that I trade in my power supply for something beefier, along the lines of 620 watts or 700.

Anyway I'll try this when I get home. I'm at work right now so I can't tinker.

He is full of shit honestly, test it out yourself, remove anything you dont need, single stick of memory, no sound, single hdd, no optical, I gurantee you still wont see a difference. 500 is quite enough for that system especially with it being a good name brand enermax. You may need a 700 if its an el-cheapo but not with a decent brand

Yeah, I gotcha. If the adapter doesn't work I'm going to call them again and request a replacement.

Do you know of any good freeware for monitoring your power supply usage? Or can you do that via the BIOS? I just don't want to blow out an expensive power supply when I can get the 620w for only $20 or $30 more.

Aside from the internal components I run a lot of peripherals.

Wacom Tablet
Scanner
3x External HDDs
Mouse, Keyboard (duh)

Thanks again!

The external devices use a VERY small amount of power, usb tops at 100mA so the draw in the grand scheme of things is negligable. You can go into the bios to monitor voltages, make sure they are within a 10% +/- of the nominal value eg 5.5 should read no more or less than 10% away.

Try seating the card again and then try it in the friends pc, im sure unless there is a problem with the power supply that it is powerful enough

Hey Radicl, could you please explain what you meant by the 10% of nominal value? I should really check my BIOS before asking but I'm curious and it's far away :)

Also, I checked some info with the card and the power supply, and the tech support guy had a point. This card needs 26 AMPS of power and my 12V rails only have 22 AMPS each. So... I'll try that connector :)

Thanks again for all your help.

Hey again,

I just got my RMA in today and it works! HOOORAAAAYY!

The first thing I noticed was that when I snapped it into the PCI-E slot, it stuck securely. There was no fiddling like with my first order. I'm not sure what was wrong with my first card exactly but it hated my motherboard for reasons unknown.

But what is known... is that I'm playing Company of Heroes and C&C3 tonight :)

Thanks for all your help guys!
