which CPU would perform better at CPU tasks?

i'm guessing the Q6600 @ 3.55ghz is faster than the QX6850 @ Stock 3.0ghz...

what about if we take cache and into account?

Easy answer: Q6600 @ 3.55GHz (9x395) is much faster than QX6850 @ 3GHz.

Same cache, you are running faster FSB on your chip (last time I checked 395 was faster than 333) so there is nothing that the QX6850 has that your chip doesn't already beat.

same platform... one is a higher overclock then the other...

If it makes you feel better the QX has an unlocked multi. Thats about it.

Higher clock (speed) of the Q6600 is all that matters. The higher FSB is just the means by which you get to that end.

I'd sell off that q6600 for $100 (PM Me!!) and get the new chip  :D.

haha no thanks guys. i'm currently still running @ 3.55 @ 1.248Vcore (after vdroop) <~ am i saying that correct?
in bios its 1.3125 vcore

Well is the QX6850 running @ stock 9 x 333mhz the fastest it'll go with that 333mhz FSB? will the unlocked multiplier go up to like 10 or 11?

I have a QX6700, one of the ancient B3 ones, and it HATES changes to the FSB.

I can't get it stable even at 333MHz FSB (that could be my crappy Striker Extreme and i680 though).

At any rate, it will take the higher multi's though and clocks right up there as the Q6600 do. So don't be surprised if you get decent clocks out of your "extreme" quad but only by cranking up the multi and not the FSB.

Louis.... your basically asking this question to us....

You have 2 honda civics. Ones a DX the other a SiR

The DX is modified and tuned so it has 355hp while the SiR is untouched and has 300HP.

The two cars are the SAME, a CIVIC will always be a CIVIC regardless of whatever you do to it. IDENTICAL in everyway except the SiR has a few more options standard.

Option 1:
Unlocked multiplier. Kinda nice, however just because you lower the FSB and increase the Multi, that DOESNT mean voltage is held constant. So if you think you can tweek the multi, and hold the fsb and keept the voltage with higher overclock, you'll cry buying this chip.

Option 2: Well not really an option...
The Q6600 if fsb 1066 while the QX6850 is FSB 1333 <uhhh doesnt really matter cuz your fsb is 1420>

Option 3:
Its a new chip so it can present new better OR worse overclock then your current chip. This is a risk as well as a gamble.

Otherwise there the EXACT SAME. You wont see ANY difference between the two overclocked @ same GHZ

PS. Your Q6600 has 8meg cache. the QX6850 has 8meg cache.

Are you mistaking this chip for a QX9650? Cuz thats a Yorkfield, and that is definitely a different chip. Now we'd be talking about a S2000's [err a RSX would be a better comparison] to a civic if we keep the car index..

okay i got it.

no, i do not own both chips, i own the Q6600 in my profile. i'm comparing mine to the top of the line Kentsfield QX6850 and thats staying Stock @ 3.0ghz.

No offence but your a diamond member who's a veteran at overclocking, has been on this forum for over 2 years and you didn't know that your heavily overclocked q6000 series cpu was faster than a slower clocked one? o_O

Now it seems to me that even if you oc'd the Q6600 to just the same 3ghz as the QX6850 @ the stock 3ghz, but you used a FSB of more than 1333, it would outperform the QX6850 since the two c2duo chips it is made of communicate via the FSB. Not to mention that the higher fsb would also improve the performance of system in general. Isn't it always better to use a higher fsb, everything else being equal?
Unfortunately my QX6700 (b3) is not friendly with any major fsb increases, so I'm forced to use the multiplier settings for any oc'ing and stick with my 1066 fsb.

FSB speed doesn't really matter to overall system performance though... unless you're running a four socket server. There are plenty of anandtech reviews that confirm this. You may gain 1-2% going from 1066 to 1333 and another 1% going to 1600

is this the CPU-Z reading: Rated FSB? mine is at 1580mhz

two million

LOL. whatever your chip and board can handle. I think motherboards might only go up to a certain multi, but i may be mistaken.

Yeah, the Q6600, if overclocked to 1333FSB, would be identical to a stock QX6850.
