Q3A in Win NT with an nVidia Vanta 16MB - way too dark

I loaded Quake 3 on a work machine and found my brightness control is disabled and the display is way too dark to play. Adjusting the monitor brightness doesn't help, either. I have tried to set:

/r_ignorehwgamma 1
/r_overbrightbits 0
/vid_restart

It didn't help. Any other suggestions???

I play on Win98SE at home with no problems anything like this.
 
I've also tried to adjust with a console command:

/r_gamma

No luck....damn, I'm gonna get my ass kicked if I can't see my opponents....

Anyone?
