Q: Win2003 Server, file sharing. How to allow more than 1 user to a file..

Is there a property/setting in Windows 2003 that locks shared file if a user is using it? There's 1 datafile that multiple users need to get access to at the same time, but Win2003 isn't allowing access to it if someone is already on.

Any help or suggestions to try? Thanks in advance.

What kind of file? Certain file types do not allow multiple simultaneous edits, such as Excel files. It has nothing to do with the file share.

It's a datafile which is supposed to be used by multiple client computers at the same time. It works as described in Win2k and WinNt4 server. I'm just wondering if it's a permission or setting in Win2003 that denies access after 1 user is using the file.

I'm just researching this for a someone who is having this issue. Unfortunately I do not have Win2003 on site so I cannot test or play around with it.

This is not the operating system's fault.

When a program opens a file, that program specifies what sharing it will allow on the file while the file is open. So, the first program that opened the file apparently did so and didn't allow any other programs to open the file.

But why does it work in Win2k server and not Win2k3 server? The program hasn't changed, just the operating system. It has been verified that it will work in Win2k if they go back to the operating system.

Might want to contact the vendor of the software directly to see if there's any patches? If you're saying it works perfectly under w2k.
