Why is the left hand considered "unclean?" It is a cultural thing?

so uh, Bathroom Tech is on the history channel as we speak... it is unclean because it is the hand you use to remove the leftover waste on your body...

literally like 5 minutes ago they said this.

This; wipe with left, eat with right. If you're in the middle east never shake someones hand with your left; serious insult to them.

Yes, but only in Muslim countries.

Around here, most of us would consider the right hand unclean.

They do kiss each other on the lips when greeting each other, no?

I lived in the Philippines... TP was no where to be found in the more rural areas. Just a can sitting by the toilet.

they have moved on from the crapper, and are now on toothbrushes... you missed watching a low-flow toilet take down 11 golf-balls though.

One of the ER docs I worked with was seriously disturbed...

He asked a 400lb woman how she wiped after she used the toilet. Her response was that she spread a towel on the edge of the bathtub and straddled it to wipe.

I will forever have that image when I look at morbidly obese people now :(

Sanitory reasons. However, I think in the modern era of 'easily accessible soap' ( ;) ), the taboo isn't as necessary anymore.

However, its still good to practice clean habits just to be safe and universal usage of the right hand would be one of them.

That doesn't mean the left hand is dirty, it just means that in case some idiot didn't wash their hands right - and you both know that you view the left as the 'not preferred hand' , and I shake them with my right hand, then the chances of getting screwed with EColi or some shit decreases (although still possible). Or if I have to touch food, I'll do so with my right hand. But of course you can get sick with the right hand as well. Its all about probabilities.

And I do believe it has relevance in today's world. Go to a truly destitute country (most places in Africa work well, as well as SE Asia) where a well stocked and clean bathroom isn't the standard...and my my my will you understand the necessity.

One reason I never want to visit India. I can handle primitive toilets, but wiping with my bare hand is crossing the line.
