Speaking of unlocked phones, I just bought an unlocked Motorola V551. Anyone know if it is compatible with T-Mobile's prepaid plans?

Unlocking is great, I'm a T-Mobile user and I wanted a GSM phone that only AT&T offered at the time. I bought the unlocked phone, in an AT&T box and all, but since it's unlocked, I just pop my SIM card in and it works perfectly on T-Mobile

but it only works for cingular and I have tmobile and like everyone says not buying a new phone but switching carriers.

bah...the k750i is better...
Bah right back at ya. Sure the k750 has a slightly better camera, but it doesn't have edge. The S710a does.

I'm wiating for the SE W800 and the Nok N90

That Nokia N90 is going to be hot!! I'll pass on the W800 though. It's pretty much the same as the k750i

not that it matters if the phone you buy doesnt operate @ the frequency that carrier uses. gotta be careful of that still.

ALSO, yes Edge is supported in the US as proved by my phone having the edge symbol on all the time, mocking me with faster internet that I cannot use. Its kinda annoying like having a huge amount of stuff in your system tray.

You made me realize that my new phone is locked to Cingular, where my old phone was not. Darn it. :p

I have an unlocked Moto v551 and can use a prepaid TMobile sim in it. It was originally a Cingular locked phone.

Check ebay.

Call Cingular after you have had service on that phone for at least 2 months. Tell them you need it unlocked b/c you are going to travel internationally and need to use local country sim chips.

I'll tell you why.
This is why:

Very nice, but not available through ANY US carriers yet.
But its a quad band phone. You could use it right now. Just get one thats unlocked and put your own SIM in it.
Of course, since you dont buy them with service, unlocked phones sell for full retail. Which is usually comparable to a cheap laptop or a high-end PDA.
