Q on New York Gun laws (air guns)

I've got a buddy who wants to purchase a rather large airgun for "sports shooting." He claims that "airsoft" guns are safe and that they can't hurt someone even at point blank.

My question is, do New York State and City laws even allow the possession of such a weapon? These things look and apparently feel real. As a good friend, I wish to protect him from getting in trouble with the law and potentially hurting himself and others.

Any help would be much appreciated.

A pellet gun can do plenty of damage. I believe they're legal and you must be 16 or older to own one, not positive though.

I assume by "airsoft," he means those guns that shoot the hollow soft plastic pellets, which I believe are relatively safe, barring getting one in your eye.

well what does airsoft fall under, toy or real?
a bb/pellet gun should fall under real because they can cause damage.

Thanks. That's pretty much all I need. Do you have a credible source link? (Not something like retailers not being able to ship to certain locations which I'm already aware of.)

That's insane.
No kidding.

Not really considering how real they look. I doubt that he's going to be taking it outside his apartment but even then, if someone looks through his window and sees some guy holding a gun, it will surely call the cops.

When it comes to guns, NYC is atrocious with who they actually allow to carry any sort.

Atrocious, or just playing it safe? There are people stupid enough to parade around schools and streets with toy guns that look all too real.
