Q: Is Gwen a male or female name, or, is it an androgynous name?

I'd say female. I've never met a male Gwen though I have known a few female Gwens.

Gwen is definitely female. Guwaine pronounced 'Gwen' is definitely male. Also, Carrol is definitely male.

"Guwaine" is a playground ass-whopping wait to happen.

Sorry, I didn't think the Welsh used vowels. :)

short for Gwendolyn, or less likely, Guinevere.

never heard of a guy named Gwen. Glenn is the closest that I can think of to a male name that sounds like Gwen.

Hmmm... I asked because I have a fellow classmate named Gwen who is brilliant IMO, but a couple of us can't figure out whether or not he/she is male or female... it makes it difficult to address him/her since no one want to offend and alienate Gwen! :(

You could ask in a polite and non-offending way like "Yo dude, you got a vagina?"
