Do you work in retail because it's a job, it's part-time for you or do you see retail as your future? Just curious :)

When I worked for Gateway, it was a cool job to have, and paid pretty well considering the jobs in my area. I never saw a future in sales, but it was a good job to have while going to college ;)

Walmart retail sucks most of the time. I just got my associates degree and in a few weeks I will be taking a leave of absence and attending Western Illinois University. I could have a future in retail but I don't think it's worth the effort it takes of climbing the ladder. Once you do get a decent management job, you have to constantly strive to improve yourself and not fall off the ladder.

The only two times i worked retail was a grocery store (in high school) and worked at a Media Play in college. I think i spent more money than i made at media play...

I work in retail...but its a higher level of sales than most retail people. My job has unlimited income potential and no ceiling for advancement. Add in the fact that I am great at what I do, and it makes it damn hard to leave

I'm in retail for the same reason. There are a million reasons why I work at Gateway right now: great pay, easy, flexible hours, good experience for my resume, etc. I make $13 an hour plus whatever commissions I make and it comes out to about $50k a year. All in all a good way to make some decent money while going to school and still be able to put some away.

Which store do you work at? At least your store didn't get axed :(

Stockton, CA. I'm not counting on anything from the company. If it goes down it goes down. I've got enough retail experience to get a job almost anywhere without too much struggle. I do enjoy my spot at Gateway right now though. Spend an hour making sure merchandise is set out properly and then sell the rest of the day.

Yep, that's about it. I miss it so much (just because it was SOOOO easy to do). Hell, if we were dead, we'd just download movies online and fvck around. Right before they axed us, we had just recieved a new manager a few months before, and he was finally turning the store around. Hell, we were doing better than some of the stores they decided to keep open at the time. I just wish they would have reevaluated their decisions, which they undoubtedly made a long time before the actual closing dates, before everything was final.

That sucks. I want to move to the Pleasanton, CA store because it's about 30 minutes closer to my house but it's on the bubble of closing. I don't see why they would do it as that area is one of the most affluent that I know of around here. The Best Buy I used to work at across the street was one of the busiest in the region. If they would move the store their revenues would double. Hopefully with all the new products we are bringing out there will be more revenue streams to make commission off of. Although since I made $2500 last month in commish alone if it stays the same it's all good.

How big is your store? Mine was pretty small, we only had 6 solutions advisors ;) We were selling around 250k a month, which was pretty good for a store our size (we were a Tier 3 store, I believe - one of the smallest.) Here're some pictures: http://www.ryanbloedow.com/Gateway/gateway.htm

I don't work retail, which do I pick in the poll?

If I don't get an answer in 5 minutes, I'm voting at random.

I worked in retail because it was a job. I might be taking a second job in retail, once again, because it puts money in my pocket.

I worked at Starbucks when I was in college cause it paid well and it was fun. I also got a lot of perks once I moved to the service technician position. I had my own truck with unlimited gas, cell phone, pager, all the tools I wanted, and the freedom to set my own schedule. It was awesome.

It's just a stepping stone. I currently make salary, 1g every two weeks + commission. It isn't that bad but you all know about my rants.
