I took an entire semester's course studying Lucas' work.
You'd be amazed at how many stories Star Wars takes influence from. LoTR is one of them.


BTW: LoTR's story started being written in World War I. Star Wars started in 1975.

What I hate is how the WW2 B-52 and B-24 gun turret operators totally ripped off Lucas' Episode IV with their combat footage! :|

And Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress stole the whole idea of a small band escorting and protecting a princess!

Lucas just gets no respect.
